这支腰刀的刀身微弯，前五分之四为单刃，靠近刀尖处开有较长的反刃。刀背平直，自护手前端约11.5厘米处至双刃起始段设一道窄血槽，同一起点另有一条更宽的中线血槽向刀尖延伸。

刀柄略呈弧状且微凸，原以蓝色编织带缠绕，现因表面涂蜡或漆色已暗沉。柄首为喇叭状黄铜柄首，护手后配有黄铜柄箍。椭圆形黄铜护手扁平，边缘带有浅折沿。刀身一面刻双列字符铭文，另一面留椭圆框印记。

刀身处有凿刻的铭文，虽然有磨损、且字迹较为潦草，但是仍可辨认为“镇海营 二百廿三号”，也就是镇海营军中的第223号佩刀，可以明确判断为官造的制式佩刀。

“镇海营”在清代设有多处，在青海地区，镇海营是清代丹噶尔古城的重要军事机构。清雍正三年（1725年），镇海协营府移驻丹噶尔古城，最初设参将一员，配备马战兵250名、步战兵125名和守兵125名。

乾隆四十七年（1782年）改为游击管辖，道光三年（1823年）升格为镇海协营，驻副将一员，负责环青海湖地区的军务，并保障当地商贸安全，成为当时青海最高的军事单位之一，拥兵数千。

在福建地区，镇海营与福州船政局相关。最早进驻船政附近的陆军是勇营系统的镇海营，营盘旧址位于福州马尾三江新村一带，主要负责船政及马尾地区的保卫和巡防任务。‌‌在台湾地区，镇海营隶属于浙江水师，后曾归属左宗棠湘军系统。

The blade is slightly curved, single edged for most of its length, and double edged for the last fifth.

The back is otherwise flat. One narrow fuller runs from 11.5 cm above the guard to the start of the double edged section of the blade, and a wider, central fuller runs from the same point and extends further towards the tip of the blade.

The hilt is slightly curved and slightly bulbous, bound with braid which was once blue, but is now darkened with wax or lacquer on the outer surface.

It is fitted with a flaring brass pommel and a brass collar beside the guard. The brass guard is oval and flat, with a forward-curved flange around its edge. An inscription composed of two columns of characters is scratched onto one face of the blade, and there is a stamped mark in a cartouche on the other side of the blade.
