A two‑month undercover investigation by China Central Television (CCTV) has revealed a troubling practice in the live fish supply chain: traders across multiple provinces are using unapproved anesthetics to sedate fish during transport.
sedate /sɪˈdeɪt/ v.
Reporters traced the process from wholesale markets to producers and restaurants. At an aquatic products market in Chongqing, large shipments of live fish arrived in a near‑comatose state, lying motionless in the water. Within minutes of aeration, they revived — a sign that they had been sedated.
The investigation captured workers adding a capful of liquid into barrels of live fish, causing the fish to go limp almost instantly. The product, labeled Yuhubao, listed eugenol as its main ingredient but carried no manufacturer information, production date, or quality certification. Vendors admitted to using it to make fish easier to handle and to prevent scale loss during transit. Medical experts note that prolonged or excessive exposure to eugenol can harm the liver and kidneys.
Similar practices were found at a seafood wholesale market in Linyi, Shandong province, where traders used industrial alcohol as a sedative. Without any precise measurement, they poured the substance directly into fish tanks — just a few capfuls were enough to sedate thousands of kilograms of fish. Although market management said such practices were banned, reporters observed industrial alcohol containers and large buckets of pre‑mixed anesthetic sitting openly in the market, with no action taken by officials.
Tracing the supply chain, reporters visited a manufacturer in Ji'an, Jiangxi province that produces eugenol. The factory acknowledged importing raw materials from Indonesia and selling the product as a food additive, though it was aware that fish traders were using it as an anesthetic. A representative noted that eugenol takes at least 48 hours to fully clear from a fish's system.
In Suzhou, Anhui province, at an agricultural products logistics center, investigators found traders using MS‑222 — an anesthetic not approved in China for use on fish destined for human consumption.
Following the findings, China's State Administration for Market Regulation launched a coordinated enforcement effort with local authorities in Chongqing and Linyi.
