“In 2023, an idea first took root in my mind: Could we enable high school students to truly experience the full journey of scientific research or entrepreneurship? Not just theoretical discussions or mere task completion, but a genuine passion that comes from the heart—allowing them to personally go through the entire process, from proposal development and project approval to mid-term reports and the final presentation of results, so they can truly experience the joy and sense of accomplishment that comes from conducting research.”

Training Session on Topic Selection for the Second Cohort of the Project Incubator

“With this mix of trepidation and determination, I discussed the idea with school administrators and my colleagues. To my immense surprise, this seemingly bold concept received unanimous support and approval. A seed had been planted in the fertile ground of Farragut, a place that embraces innovation and change. From that day forward, the X-plorer Project Incubator officially began its journey at TFS.”

Mid-Term Report on the Third Cohort of the Project Incubator

“So I gathered the children around and asked them with a smile, ‘Would you like to experience what it’s like to be a “project founder”? To identify a real-life problem, come up with your own solution, and find like-minded partners to give it a try. Along the way, you’ll face countless challenges, but you’ll do your very best to find the answer until you become the ones who can move this project forward.’”

Ms. Zhou Wei, Administrative Principal of Tianjin Farragut School, presented Ms. Helen Wu with the TFS Incubator Outstanding Mentor Certificate.

“I told them, ‘Perhaps your efforts will lead to the creation of a new product, or clarify a point of view, or touch the hearts of many people. This path is full of uncertainties and challenges, but along the way, you will develop the ability to see the world clearly, learn to turn your ideals into reality, and—through perseverance, knowledge, collaboration, and resource integration—take a small problem and turn it into a major breakthrough.’”

“Over the course of this journey, we’ve successfully completed 15 projects. Among them, students passionate about technology developed an innovative project using drones to capture VR footage; children concerned about elderly people with Alzheimer’s disease designed portable recognition glasses to help them identify people; there are teenagers passionate about pets and the environment who created a transformable plush bag for pet owners to store supplies; there are a few kind-hearted children who designed a full set of warm, creative products for stray cats on campus; and there are also documentary films advocating for autism non-profits, replicas of cultural relics donated to art museums, and a crystal craft website empowering the autism community, among other projects.”

Ms. Helen Wu presented certificates to the students of the project incubator

“I feel fortunate to be able to accompany them on this journey, trying new things, exploring, and breaking through barriers together. Every time we discuss project roadblocks, I can feel the sparks of ideas flying; sometimes, I’ll casually mention a small idea or two, and they’ll take that direction to blaze a whole new trail. I have also witnessed their remarkable ability to iterate. Many projects have evolved from version 1.0 all the way to 2.0, 3.0, and even 5.0, giving me a real sense of the vibrant energy of the younger generation’s minds. At the same time, the mentors in each project team have given their all in their respective fields, quietly supporting the students; and the full support of all the parents has become a solid foundation for the children’s courageous exploration.”

“When we truly give them free rein—encouraging children to take bold action, bravely embrace failure, actively seek solutions, and continuously refine their ideas—the process of watching them overcome challenges, grow rapidly, and continually evolve is the most rewarding and fulfilling experience for an educator.”

This is the essence of the X-plorer Project Incubator:It’s not about teaching children how to do things, but about believing in them—that they are capable of doing it on their own.

Follow the Light

Embark on a New Journey and Chase Your Dreams

From its tentative first steps in the first cohort to the fruitful achievements of the third, the growth of the X-plorer Project Incubator would not have been possible without the dedicated guidance of Ms. Helen Wu, the quiet support of the faculty mentors, and the full backing of the parents—and, above all, the courageous exploration of every young participant. The three phases of the project spanned multiple fields, including technology, public welfare, and culture. Notably, Sophie’s project from Phase 3, "Building a Cognitive Lighthouse for Alzheimer’s Disease", won the “Best Silver-Tech and Cognitive Care Award,” serving as a model for the integration of public welfare and technology. It not only showcased the students’ innovative spirit but also documented their growth and transformation from identifying problems to solving them.

Sophie’s project, “Building a Cognitive Lighthouse for Alzheimer’s Disease,” has successfully advanced to the global finals at the ISEF Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Regional Competition.

With the support of the X-plorer Project Incubator, Sophie entered a prestigious science and innovation competition with her project “Building a Cognitive Lighthouse for Alzheimer’s Disease.” She stood out in the ISEF Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Regional Qualifiers—where the acceptance rate was a mere 0.3%—and was successfully selected for the national team, earning a spot in the global finals. As the only finalist from the Tianjin region and the first student from our school to achieve this distinction in the past eight years, her breakthrough not only highlights her personal capabilities but also attests to our school’s strong foundation in cultivating scientific and technological talent. As the premier platform for middle school science and technology innovation, ISEF sees only 1,800 students advance to the global finals out of millions of participants each year; this achievement serves as powerful evidence of our school’s strength in fostering scientific research.

Every project is a learning experience, and every breakthrough in a competition reflects the educational value of the incubator. Moving forward, the X-plorer Project Incubator will continue to deepen its commitment to PBL education and refine its incubation model, providing Faragut students with a broader platform for hands-on learning. We aim to empower every student to become the creator of their own projects and set their sights on the stars and the vast ocean.
