Zhou Qian, a senior researcher and ancient architecture expert of the Palace Museum, has published a new book which has drawn wide attention for debunking many long-standing myths about the Palace Museum.

Regarding the rumor that 60 tons of pig blood is used annually at the Forbidden City to ward off evil, Zhou Qian clarified that pig blood is merely an adhesive in the plaster coating on ancient wood structures. Mixed with brick dust, tung oil and hemp, it protects wooden structures from weathering and pests. Its chemical properties enhance adhesion and durability, showing the scientific wisdom of ancient craftsmen.
