LEMAIRE, the French fashion house, has become embroiled in controversy following the release of promotional visuals that many Chinese netizens have interpreted as culturally offensive.
The disputed image features a model wearing what appears to be a long braid and traditional-style long garment while holding a pair of scissors — an ensemble that critics say evokes negative historical stereotypes. The backlash quickly spread across Chinese social media platforms.
4月26日,LEMAIRE发布官方声明致歉:
我们关注到近期围绕Objets Senteur系列中Tresse物件及其呈现方式所引发的讨论。Tresse为一款以手工编织亚麻制成、用于承载香氛的器物作品。对于此次器物与影像表达所引发的疑虑、不适与困扰,我们在此致以诚挚的歉意。
我们也意识到,在此次发布与呈现过程中,我们未能充分考虑不同文化语境下可能产生的感知差异与敏感性。作为一个面向全球、多元文化受众的品牌,我们深知在创意表达中应承担更审慎的责任。相关反馈对我们而言十分重要,我们已着手对内部流程进行反思与调整,以进一步提升文化意识与责任感,并尽力避免类似情况再次发生。

On Sunday, the French fashion brand apologized.
"We sincerely apologize for any discomfort caused," LEMAIRE said in a statement. "We failed to consider how the image might be perceived in different cultural contexts. We are reviewing our internal processes to prevent this from happening again."
The brand also thanked its Chinese audience for their honest feedback.
