四年前,罗悦懿(Melody)从澳洲回到国内,入读美伦国际高中UK学部,开始学习IGCSE和A-Level课程。那时候的她,对未来的概念还有些模糊——选课凭的是“好不好玩”。她不是那种从小立志从医的“标准学霸”——她喜欢弹钢琴、踢足球、打篮球、做科学实验,IG初期选了商务和计算机。直到IG大考前一个月,她在升学指导的提醒下,临时换选生物,从此踏上医学专业方向申请之路。

Four years ago, Melody Luo returned to China from Australia and enrolled in the UK Division of Majestic International College (MIC), where she began her IGCSE and A-Level studies. Back then, her vision of the future was still a bit vague—she chose subjects based on whether they seemed "fun." She wasn't the kind of "straight-A genius" who had dreamed of becoming a doctor since childhood. She enjoyed playing the piano, playing soccer and basketball, and doing science experiments. In the early stages of IGCSE, she chose business and computer science. It wasn't until one month before her IGCSE final exams, after some advice from her college counsellor, that she switched to biology at the last minute—and from that moment on, she embarked on the path toward applying to medical programs.

她开始用PubMed查论文,做EPQ研究五花肉和排骨的成分差异,学一遍遍查文献、换方法、再试错。她在学校的思辨阁模拟辩论,听剑桥教授点评自己的EPQ项目,在前剑桥招生官的模拟面试里学到了“招生官看的不是答案,是思考过程”。她站上舞台主持晚会,在钢琴前演奏一曲,在足球和篮球校队里理解了团队协作——后来她说:“做医生也不是一个人在战斗,运动让我提前明白了什么叫‘我们’。

She began using PubMed to search for academic papers, conducted an EPQ project comparing the compositional differences between pork belly and pork ribs, and learned to review literature, switch methods, and iterate through trial and error. She participated in mock debates at MIC's "Think Tank" program, received feedback from a Cambridge professor on her EPQ project, and learned from a mock interview with a former Cambridge admissions officer that "admissions officers aren't looking for the right answer—they're looking at your thought process." She stepped onto the stage to host school galas, played the piano at performances, and learned the value of teamwork as a member of the soccer and basketball teams. Later, she said, "Being a doctor isn't a solo endeavor either. Sports taught me what 'we' means long before medicine did."

2026年申请季,她斩获帝国理工学院(医学生物科学)、两份UCL录取以及美国加州大学UC系等名校通知书。从“觉得好玩”到找到真正的热爱,从澳洲的自由成长到英国G5的学术舞台——在美伦的四年,对她而言像一场缓慢而坚定的蜕变。

In the 2026 application cycle, she received offers from Imperial College London (Medical Bioscience), two offers from UCL, and acceptances from the University of California system and other prestigious universities. From simply thinking something was "fun" to discovering her true passion, from the free-spirited education of Australia to the academic stage of the UK's G5 universities—her four years at MIC have been a quiet but determined transformation.

你最初是怎么确定自己对医学的兴趣的?

How did you first develop your interest in medicine?

A:

其实最开始是因为我的爷爷,我看到他生病,心里很疑惑:为什么这种病没法治愈?那种无能为力的感觉让我开始对医学产生了好奇。在澳洲读书的时候,我也很喜欢做科学实验,当时我们解剖了一只羊脑,我当时就觉得特别有意思。后来A-Level课程里也会讲“为什么羊脑是白色的”,课本没讲透,我会自己去查资料,慢慢发现——哇,原来学术研究是这样的。

It actually started with my grandfather. I saw him get sick, and I kept wondering: why is there no cure for this disease? That feeling of helplessness sparked my curiosity about medicine. When I was studying in Australia, I also loved doing science experiments. We dissected a sheep's brain once, and I found it really fascinating. Later, in my A-Level classes, when we talked about "why sheep brains are white," the textbook didn't go deep enough. So I started looking things up myself, and slowly I thought—wow, so this is what academic research is really like.

Q:

你在IG阶段其实一开始没选生物,后来是怎么转过来的?

You didn't originally choose biology at IGCSE. How did you make the switch?

A:

对,我IG一开始选的商务、计算机这些,觉得“有意思”。但后来升学指导老师提醒我,如果以后想走医学方向,生物是必须的。我当时IG大考前一个月才去找生物老师Aharon,说我想备考。老师很支持我,我课后、午休都在学习、找他问问题,特别感谢我的老师。

Right. I originally chose business and computer science because they seemed "interesting." But later, my college counsellor reminded me that if I wanted to go into medicine, biology was essential. So just one month before my IGCSE finals, I went to my biology teacher, Mr. Aharon, and told him I wanted to prepare for the exam. He was incredibly supportive. I studied during breaks and lunchtimes and kept asking him questions. I'm especially grateful to him.

Q:

你提到IG阶段是“A-Level的预告片”,这个比喻很有意思,能具体说说吗?

You've said that IGCSE is like "the trailer for A-Level." That's an interesting analogy. Could you explain?

A:

对,IG不像A-Level那么深,但它会让你快速知道:你喜欢什么,以及更重要的——你特别不喜欢什么。

比如我一开始选中文,由于从小在澳洲长大,所以回国后学中文还是感到吃力,学得辛苦成绩也拿不高分。等到A-Level选课就可以避开不擅长学习的科目,更能合理规划了。所以IG就是给你试错的,不要浪费这个阶段。

Yes. IGCSE isn't as deep as A-Level, but it quickly shows you what you like—and, more importantly, what you really don't like.
For example, I chose Chinese at first. But since I grew up in Australia, I found it challenging after returning to China. I worked hard, but my grades weren't high. When it came time to choose my A-Level subjects, I could avoid the ones I wasn't good at and plan more strategically. So IGCSE is really a time for trial and error. Don't waste that phase.

你是怎么确定自己申请方向的?

How did you decide on your application direction?

A:

其实是“倒推法”。我先去看大学官网的专业要求,比如帝国理工、UCL的医学生物科学需要哪些A-Level科目。然后我再上UCAS搜专业类型,看不同专业在学什么、未来能做什么。最后一步是和学校升学办老师一起找,他们帮我梳理哪些专业匹配我的背景和兴趣。

不要自己闷头想,升学老师能给你很多你没想到的选项。

It was actually a "backward planning" approach. I first looked at the entry requirements on university websites—for example, what A-Level subjects Imperial or UCL require for Medical Bioscience. Then I went on UCAS to search for different program types, to see what they teach and what careers they lead to. Finally, I worked with my school's college counselling office. They helped me figure out which programs matched my background and interests.
Don't just figure it out on your own. College counsellors can give you many options you wouldn't have thought of.

你参加了很多学校的学术活动,有什么特别印象深刻的吗?

You participated in a lot of academic activities at school. Did anything leave a particularly strong impression?

A:

有。10年级的时候参加了学校的“牛剑藤营”,有大学教授和招生官来讲座,教我们怎么搜学术资源,还做了辩论赛模拟。后来剑桥神经科的教授来学校,我给他展示了我的EPQ项目,其中一位剑桥博士嘉宾问了我“两种猪肉对脑发育和心理健康的影响”,给我带来了不一样的视角思考。

还有一次是前剑桥招生官来模拟面试,他说他其实不是考你数学题对不对,而是看你解题的思路和逻辑。那对我触动很大。

Yes. In Year 10, I took part in the school's "Oxbridge & Ivy League Camp," where university professors and admissions officers gave lectures, taught us how to search for academic resources, and we did mock debates. Later, a Cambridge neuroscience professor came to school. I presented my EPQ project to him, and one of the Cambridge PhD guests asked me, "How do these two types of pork affect brain development and mental health?" That gave me a whole new perspective.
Another time, a former Cambridge admissions officer conducted a mock interview with me. He said that he wasn't really testing whether I got the math problem right—he was looking at how I approached it and the logic behind my thinking. That really struck me.

你从澳洲回到国内读国际课程,这个选择对你的申请有什么帮助?

How did your decision to return to China and study an international curriculum help with your applications?

A:

如果留在澳洲,我可能就走澳洲体系,只能考澳洲的大学了。回来让我有了更多选择——我可以同时申请英国、美国和澳洲等不同的国家,让我的未来有了更多可能性。

If I had stayed in Australia, I would have followed the Australian system and probably only been able to apply to Australian universities. Coming back gave me more options. I could apply to universities in the UK, the US, Australia, and other countries simultaneously. That opened up many more possibilities for my future.

除了学习和科研,你在美伦的校园生活是什么样的?

What was your campus life like at MIC, beyond academics and research?

A:

其实我在美伦过得挺“忙”的,但不是只忙学习。

我特别喜欢弹钢琴,多次在学校晚会演奏,那种在舞台上和大家分享音乐的感觉,让人开心。

我还会主持,学校的一些晚会和活动我会去当主持人,锻炼了我的表达和应变能力。

体育方面我也没落下——我参加了足球校队和篮球校队。踢足球和打篮球都是团队运动,你得和队友配合、沟通、互相补位。后来我发现,这种团队协作的能力在医学里也很重要。医生不是一个人在战斗,你要和护士、药师、其他科室的同事一起工作。运动让我提前理解了什么叫“我们”而不是“我”。

I was actually quite "busy" at MIC, but not just with studying.
I really enjoy playing the piano. I performed at several school galas, and sharing music with everyone on stage was just a joyful experience.
I also did some hosting. I emceed some school events and activities, which improved my communication and adaptability.
And I stayed active in sports—I was on both the soccer team and the basketball team. Soccer and basketball are team sports. You have to coordinate with your teammates, communicate, and cover for each other. Later, I realized that this ability to work as a team is also crucial in medicine. A doctor doesn't work alone. You collaborate with nurses, pharmacists, and colleagues from other departments. Sports taught me the meaning of "we" rather than "me" long before medicine did.

It's how to choose—after trying business, computer science, and biology at IGCSE, you'll know which path is worth pursuing.

It's how to plan—using "backward planning" to select your courses, researching your dream schools on UCAS, and breaking down your goals into actionable steps.

It's how to build your strength—reviewing the literature again after a failed experiment, understanding collaboration and expression on the sports field and on stage.

Melody wasn't born knowing what she wanted. But she learned how to find it.
