At the Start of Summer, all things flourish. As recorded in the Ming dynasty text Eight Notes on Lotus Life: "On the first days of early summer, heaven and earth begin to intertwine, and all things bloom in unison." By this time, summer-harvest crops enter their final growth stages: winter wheat flowers and grains fill, rapeseed nears maturity, and the year's harvest prospects are largely determined. Hence, the farming proverb advises, "Assess summer at the Start of Summer." Meanwhile, rice transplantation and the management of spring-sown crops enter a bustling peak season.

The Start of Summer marks the farewell to spring and the beginning of summer, earning it the name "Spring’s Farewell Day." After this solar term, sunlight intensifies, temperatures rise gradually, and thunderstorms increase. It signifies the vital season when all life enters a phase of vigorous growth.

Health Preservation during the Start of Summer

Legend holds that from the Start of Summer onward, warm and increasingly hot weather causes many, especially children, to experience fatigue, weakness, reduced appetite, and weight loss—a condition called Zhu Xia (summer lethargy). The goddess Nüwa taught people to hang boiled chicken, duck, or goose eggs around children’s necks on this day to ward off the ailment.

Avoid: Spicy Foods

As summer heat intensifies after Lixia, irritability and heart strain may arise, accompanied by diminished appetite.

Avoid: Ice-Cold Drinks

Focus on light, easily digestible, vitamin-rich meals. Minimize heavy, greasy, or spicy foods.

Emphasize: Balanced Nutrition

Incorporate lotus seeds, soy products, chicken, lean meat, sesame, corn, and milk into diets. These not only nourish but also support heart health.
