范文及解析

Introduction

A rising adult illiteracy rate has reawakened much debate surrounding whether public funding should tilt towards youth education or writing and reading programs for adults. In my view, equal emphasis should be placed on both sides of this argument.

解析

本段译文(translation):

不断上升的成人文盲率重新引发了一场激烈的辩论:公共资金应该倾向于年轻人教育,还是面向成年人的读写项目。在我看来,双方应该得到同等的重视。

不太常见的词汇(less common lexical items):

❖ adult illiteracy rate n. 成人文盲率

❖ reawaken verb. 重新引发

❖ tilt towards verb. 倾向于

❖ writing and reading programs n. 读写项目

Body paragraph 1

Of course, prioritizing youth education exclusively would ignore the immediate economic damage caused by a large illiterate adult workforce. For example, OECD data show that raising adult literacy can increase national productivity strikingly, whereas uneducated adults remain trapped in low‑skill, low‑output jobs. Therefore, failing to spend public money on adult literacy perpetuates poverty cycles and wastes valuable human capital. Moreover, neglecting adult reading and writing skills creates intergenerational social problems, as illiterate parents struggle to support their children’s learning. Evidence from UNESCO indicates that children of unschooled adults are twice as likely to drop out of school themselves, forming a self‑reinforcing cycle of illiteracy. Consequently, a one‑sided focus on youth education fails to break this cycle, and society as a whole bears the long‑term cost.

❖ prioritize verb. 优先考虑

❖ illiterate adj. 文盲的

❖ workforce n. 劳动力

❖ strikingly adv. 显著地

❖ perpetuate verb. 使持续

❖ human capital n. 人力资本

❖ intergenerational adj. 代际的

❖ unschooled adj. 未受教育的

❖ self‑reinforcing adj. 自我强化的

❖ one‑sided adj. 单方面的

Body paragraph 2

However, channeling most public money into adult literacy while underfunding youth education would cripple a nation’s future supply of skilled workers and innovators. Countries like Finland and South Korea, which invest heavily in primary and secondary schooling, consistently top global innovation rankings, whereas neglect of youth education leads to acute skills shortages within a generation. Thus, without a solid foundation for the young, even a fully literate adult population cannot sustain long‑term economic competitiveness. Furthermore, exclusive spending on adults ignores the fact that youth education is far more cost‑effective in raising overall societal welfare. To be more specific, diverting money from youth to adult learning would reduce overall educational efficiency and widen inequality, rather than solving the illiteracy problem.

❖ channel into verb. 投入

❖ underfund verb. 资金不足

❖ cripple verb. 削弱

❖ innovator n. 创新者

❖ primary and secondary schooling n. 中小学教育

❖ top verb. 位居榜首

❖ acute skills shortages n. 严重的技术短缺

❖ cost‑effective adj. 成本效益高的

❖ societal welfare n. 社会福利

❖ divert from verb. 从…转移

❖ educational efficiency n. 教育效率

❖ widen inequality v. 加剧不平等

Conclusion

To conclude, while adult illiteracy urgently needs public investment, it should not come at the expense of youth education. Only a balanced approach that funds both groups can break the cycle of poverty, building a truly literate and prosperous society.

解析

本段译文(translation):

总之,尽管成人文盲问题迫切需要公共资金投入,但这不应以牺牲年轻人教育为代价。只有平衡地资助两个群体,才能打破贫困循环,建设一个真正识字、繁荣的社会。

不太常见的词汇(less common lexical items):

❖ come at the expense of v. 以…为代价

❖ balanced approach n. 平衡的方法

❖ literate adj. 有读写能力的

❖ prosperous adj. 繁荣的
