As the 2026 FIFA World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19 across Canada, Mexico and the United States, Chinese universities have issued advisories urging students to balance football fervour with academic duties. With most matches airing late at night or in the early hours Beijing time, institutions are stressing discipline, health, and good conduct.
The Student Affairs Department reminds students that academic work must come first. With finals approaching, students should manage time wisely between entertainment and revision, and maintain a healthy diet.
Viewing etiquette requires minimal noise in dorms and public spaces, headphones for late matches, and no shouting or disturbance. Alcohol-related misconduct and uncivil behaviour are banned. The university also warns against illegal betting, urging students to avoid "high-odds" scams and tipster frauds.
Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT)
In a notice issued June 13, the Student Affairs Department acknowledged the World Cup's intensity but stressed that the current period is a critical junction of final exams, lab deadlines, and graduation. Students are urged to find balance.
The institute calls for quiet viewing in dorms and common areas, with headphones for late games. Respect for roommates and classmates preparing for exams is essential. Skipping classes, missing labs, or overexertion to catch matches is discouraged. Health, diligence, and passion should all be equally valued.
Yanbian University (YBU)
The Graduate Student Affairs Office struck a playful yet firm tone: with finals, papers, and deadlines piling up, "it's time to put down the remote – and the mouse." Match replays and highlights offer good quality, so not every game needs to be watched live.
"The 3 am match is thrilling, but you at 3 am are truly fragile," the guide says. The university warns that sleep deprivation is more than next-day drowsiness, and urges seeking medical help for chest tightness, palpitations, or persistent headaches. "No goal is more important than your heartbeat."
Jinan University (JNU)
The School of Physical Education warns against fraudulent activities that surge during the World Cup, including illegal betting, unofficial predictions, "guaranteed win" schemes, and rebate platforms. Gambling is illegal, and what seems like "innocent fun" can lead to financial loss, credit damage, or disciplinary action. Students are urged to protect their future and say no to all forms of betting.
Wuhan University of Technology (WUT)
The university reminds students to maintain decency and rationality online. Respect for all teams and fans is key; emotional rants should give way to reasoned discussion. Students should not spread unverified information or rumours, and should act as reliable messengers. Using emojis and measured language, the notice suggests, can keep comment sections friendly and constructive, not hostile.
