On the evening of June 24, two shallow strong earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck northern Venezuela within less than one minute. The current death toll has risen to 3,342.
The bodies of 31-year-old Werner Rivas, captain of the Venezuelan men's volleyball team, his wife and son were found in the ruins. Argentine men's football player Trejo and his whole family also unfortunately died.
The wife of second-division player Bello died in the earthquake while protecting their 1-year-old daughter. Fortunately, the child miraculously survived.
