People these days prefer to watch films and TV programs alone rather than with other people. Why is it the case? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
Introduction
It is true that watching movies and TV shows has been privatized, being done by oneself without others' company. There are various explanations for this solitary viewing and I believe it is a negative development.
❖ privatized adj.
❖ company n.
❖ solitary adj.
Body paragraph 1
Undeniably, the rising trend of solo streaming is mainly due to a vast array of device usage. Unlike previous decades when the television in the living room was the sole centerpiece of family entertainment, recent years have witnessed the proliferation of personal media players such as smartphones, tablets and laptops, which enable people to multitask or enjoy casual time while waiting for the subway or during lunch breaks, thereby releasing their daily stress or boredom. Nevertheless, at the heart of this phenomenon lies a deeper reason: the growing value on solitude. To avoid the hassle of social coordination—such as agreeing on what to watch, when to pause, or whether to rewind a scene—many individuals now prefer to immerse themselves in a particular genre of film or series, as they can fast-forward, rewind or even abandon a show without accommodating others' preferences. This precious me-time is widely regarded as an excellent way to recharge in busy lives, offering more profound self-reflection.
❖ streaming n.
❖ a vast array of 短语 大量的,各式各样的
❖ centerpiece n.
❖ proliferation n.
❖ multitask v.
❖ lunch breaks n.
❖ hassle n.
❖ solitude n.
❖ rewind v.
❖ immerse v.
❖ genre n.
❖ fast-forward v. 快进
❖ accommodate v.
❖recharge v.
Body paragraph 2
Based on the above-mentioned, I would therefore argue that this tendency is generally negative. On the surface, it seems justifiable that solitary viewing is merely a byproduct of this generation's upbringing, where personal screens have long been used as digital babysitters. However, this pattern of watching alone gradually leads to the erosion of social connection and bonding. Without shared narratives, people lose the organic moments that foster intimacy—such as discussing a plot twist, laughing at a joke together, or crying over a protagonist's fate. Over time, this isolation can slide into escapism, which diminishes one's sense of self-awareness and weakens the ability to handle emotional discomfort in real life. Instead of using media as a bridge to connect with others, individuals may retreat further into their own worlds, ultimately undermining their social skills and emotional resilience.
❖ byproduct n.
❖ upbringing n.
❖ personal screens n.
❖ digital babysitters n.
❖ erosion n.
❖ shared narratives n.
❖ intimacy n.
❖ a plot twist n.
❖ fate n. 命运
❖ slide into v.
❖ escapism n.
❖ self-awareness n.
❖ retreat v.
❖ undermine v.
Conclusion
In conclusion, although technology grants us the freedom to watch alone, we should not overlook the irreplaceable value of watching together.
❖ grant v.
❖ irreplaceable adj.
