A recent social media post showing a tourist collecting salt crystals from Qarhan Salt Lake in Qinghai province as a souvenir has triggered public alarm after some users raised the possibility of radioactivity. The scenic area has since responded, urging visitors not to remove the salt — not because of radiation, but due to health risks and environmental pressure.

Staff at the Qarhan Salt Lake site confirmed on Sunday that while picking up small salt pieces is not uncommon, the practice is strongly discouraged. "Unrefined salt may contain trace toxins," a representative said, adding that accidental ingestion remains a real concern.

Local cultural and tourism authorities echoed the warning, noting that the salt's mineral content can exceed safe levels for direct consumption and must undergo industrial processing before it is fit to eat. Beyond health hazards, officials pointed to sustainability: the salt forms slowly over time, and with the site drawing large crowds, even small amounts taken by each visitor could accumulate into a significant loss for the landscape.

Although the natural salt crystals appear clean and white, they are not the same as commercial table salt. The crude salt collected by tourists contains impurities and potentially harmful compounds — such as phosphates — that require refining (washing, drying, and sieving) to meet national food‑grade standards.
