The real reason Harry and Meghan are leaving Hollywood for Britain isn’t the one you’re being told
Many believe the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are returning to the UK because their entertainment careers have stalled. But former People editor and founder of the Celebrity Intelligence website, Dan Wakeford, explains why that doesn’t add up – and reveals the much more emotional reason behind their decision
The headlines this week framed Harry and Meghan’s move back to Britain as a retreat: a couple whose Hollywood bet didn’t pay off, coming home with their tail between their legs to regroup. That’s a tidy story, and one that the people who don’t much like Harry and Meghan are keen to tell. It also isn’t the real one.
I’ve spent the better part of this year reporting on Harry and Meghan’s finances and their entertainment career for my newsletter, Celebrity Intelligence, speaking to entertainment sources, lawyers, a PR consultant who has worked adjacent to their circle, and multiple sources inside their orbit and inside Netflix. The picture that emerges is much more nuanced than the “broke and desperate” story that is doing the rounds, and it points to a conclusion at odds with this week’s conventional wisdom: their entertainment career, while genuinely mixed, is not why they are going home. Harry is.
That is not to say all has gone swimmingly stateside for them either. They arrived in Hollywood with their American dream, an optimistic pitch: build a production company with a slate of projects that were entertaining and did some good in the world. To understand what happened to that plan, start with the numbers, because the headline figures were always misleading.
The reported $100m Netflix deal was in fact closer to $60m once development costs, overheads and delivery tranches were accounted for, sources close to the arrangement told Celebrity Intelligence. The entertainment attorney Jonathan Handel told me there was scepticism from the start about what the deal was really for: that they got it as much for the aura of “we can be in business with a British royal” as for anything else, and that if they hadn’t had the royal title, it wouldn’t have been done. The clock, in other words, was always ticking on the Hollywood dream from the moment they signed it.
Variety’s Matt Donnelly reported at the beginning of the year that the relationship inside Netflix had curdled. One insider told him: “The mood in the building is ‘We’re done.’” Ratings for With Love, Meghan were, in a Netflix source’s own phrasing, merely “on par with other lifestyle series”, and the company has spent months quietly divesting from the As Ever product line it helped build, reportedly giving away more than $10m in unsold inventory to staff. Netflix disputes the more severe characterisations. Chief content officer Bela Bajaria told Donnelly that Archewell, the couple’s group of companies, “has been a thoughtful and collaborative partner”. Either way, the exclusive five‑year deal has been downgraded to a first‑look arrangement, the kind of step‑down that happens, sources say, when a partner isn’t bringing enough greenlit product to the table.
That is a real story about diminishing returns. It is not, on its own, a story about failure. The Harry & Meghan docuseries was the biggest documentary opening in Netflix history, with 81.55 million hours watched in its first four days. Harry’s memoir, Spare, became the fastest‑selling nonfiction book in history according to Guinness World Records, with an advance Celebrity Intelligence put at around $20m (Variety has separately reported $40m; estimates vary because neither side discloses the real number).
And while the recent Girl Scouts documentary Cookie Queens, which Harry and Meghan executive produced, is routinely cited as further proof of collapse because it struggled to land theatrical distribution out of Sundance, that is a misreading. It was made to qualify for awards season, not to open in multiplexes, and it won the audience award at SXSW before the distributor Roadside Attractions bought it for release months later, a timeline confirmed independently by Celebrity Intelligence’s sources. Calling that a flop confuses what the project was built to do.
Set against that: With Love, Meghan was mocked from its first episode for lacking the domestic authority the format demands. Even so, the show picked up its first Emmy nomination in July, shortlisted for Outstanding Lifestyle Program at the Daytime Emmys, a reminder that being mocked and being recognised by your own industry aren’t mutually exclusive. The scripted polo drama, meanwhile, has sat in development for three years, which the lawyer Jonathan Handel calls a clear warning sign. “If it’s been three years in development, that’s not a good sign,” he said. “Netflix is not in the business of greenlighting good products and letting it sit around as the culture changes.”
Mark Borkowski, a PR consultant, who has watched the operation from the outside, was blunter. “It was always smoke and mirrors,” he told me. “The success of all the production deals is basically the output, and after giving a few interviews, there’s not much left.”
His diagnosis is less about talent than about who Harry and Meghan hired around them: “They didn’t look for people who would push them, so it became a vanity industry.” He points to the couple most often held up as the standard: “When you look at the Obamas, they have a phenomenal team and they listened to them. That hasn’t happened with Meghan and Harry.”
Insiders describe a simpler problem sitting underneath the personnel issue: they ran out of good stories to tell. Harry, sources say, is no longer willing to mine his own royal experience for content, given the damage the last round of it did to his relationship with his family. Once that material was off the table, there wasn’t much organic content left to produce and, unlike the Obamas, Harry and Meghan never built the in‑house operation capable of generating projects that carried their own creative DNA rather than borrowing someone else’s.
So: a genuine hit, a genuine near‑miss, an Emmy nod nobody predicted, some real disappointments, and an industry that runs almost entirely on realised commercial return, with little patience for a second failure. “Mixed. Not a disaster” would be the quote on the movie poster.
None of that is what is sending them home. When I spoke to people close to Harry earlier this year for Celebrity Intelligence, the theme that came up unprompted, again and again, was homesickness dressed up as ambition. “He doesn’t care about the appearance of wealth. He cares about the appearance of doing good work,” one source told me, describing a man who missed his family, his friends and his old life, and who would happily downsize if it meant getting some of that back. A separate source close to their world was blunter still, describing them as “wildly unhappy”.
You could see what that source meant in July, when Harry turned up, largely unannounced, on the rugby podcast Joe Marler Will See You Now. He greeted the host with hugs, talked openly about grief and the Invictus Games, and cracked jokes throughout. It was a different man from the one who narrates polished Netflix documentaries. This was a Harry who was looser, funnier, speaking in a language that was entirely his own. Six years into an American life built around production deals and speaking fees, it was the most at ease he’d looked in public in a long time.
That reporting lines up with something Celebrity Intelligence flagged weeks before this move was announced: a scorecard of the five things Harry actually asked Queen Elizabeth for when he stepped back in January 2020: family access, patronages, private income, a self‑directed schedule and a geographic split between the UK and North America. By my count, he had already achieved all five, just running in reverse, based mostly in America with UK visits layered on top. This week’s move doesn’t create a new arrangement. It flips the ratio more, and edges him closer to the “half in, half out” role the late Queen explicitly ruled out in 2020.
The trigger, in other words, wasn’t Netflix. It was Charles. King Charles was informed of the move on Sunday and, notably, was said to be pleased, the latest and warmest step in a rapprochement that began with a private reunion in July, their first significant UK visit together in years. A father moving toward his son will do more to bring Harry home than any streaming deal ever could have kept him away.
The entertainment career will keep being litigated, because that’s the version of this story Hollywood understands. But anyone who has actually spent time listening to the people around Harry and Meghan this year could see this coming. I did, in April.
