A father has been condemned by the National Zoological Museum of China for actively participating in the destruction of a rare specimen of an endangered snake, while his two children handled exhibits roughly in the endangered species hall on Friday. The museum said it strongly condemned the behavior, preserved the full surveillance footage and reserved the right to pursue legal action.

The specimen held particular significance: it was donated by Chen Yuanhui, a researcher who was the first to identify the previously unknown species in 1984 while treating a patient for a snakebite. Chen was bitten nine times while studying and protecting the species, leaving his middle finger permanently disabled.

In an interview with BRTV News on Sunday, museum director Zhang Jinshuo said surveillance staff spotted the incident and immediately sent security personnel to intervene. The father initially denied touching the specimens, but after being reminded to wash his hands, he eventually went to the restroom for two minutes.

"The problem isn't the children. We can understand that kids don't know better," Zhang said. "But the father actually picked up the specimens and played around with them. That's completely inappropriate."

Regarding why the specimens were displayed without protective glass, Zhang explained that open displays are common practice in natural history museums because they provide a better viewing experience. "Glass can cause reflections that affect observation, and the hall isn't large enough to avoid mutual reflections if both sides were covered," he said. However, he noted that after restoration, the museum may consider placing the specimens in glass cases, even if doing so compromises the viewing experience.

The museum also reiterated that touching exhibits is strictly prohibited for several reasons. Sweat and oils from hands can damage specimens, which are often irreplaceable. Some may retain traces of preservative chemicals, posing health risks if children touch their eyes or mouths afterward. The museum emphasized that these are real animals preserved for research and educational purposes, not models or toys, and should be treated with respect.
