Grand Canal Media News (Dong Ming, Xu Rong) “This visit to Yangzhou with WCCO allows us to realize that the canal is no longer just a historical landmark. It has become a bridge for cultural and economic exchanges, a platform for the sharing of experiences, and a space for cooperation and shared development,” said Wissem Moatemri, head of the 29th training program for Arab officials from Tunisian International Diplomatic Academy, and the person in charge of the education and training department at the academy. On September 18th, he led nearly 30 young diplomats and scholars from the Tunisian International Diplomatic Academy to the secretariat of the World Historic and Cultural Canal Cities Cooperation Organization (WCCO), where they participated in the “Canal Link” cultural exchange event. Tunisia, located at the northern tip of Africa and situated in the heart of the Mediterranean region, has been a place where civilizations meet and trade takes place since ancient times. The country has several waterways, such as the Bizerte Grand Canal and the Lagouledt Canal. Among these, the Bizerte Grand Canal is home to the Bizerte-Beyrouth Bridge constructed by Chinese companies. This bridge represents the largest ongoing infrastructure project in Tunisia, and its completion will greatly facilitate travel between the two sides of the canal.

“This bridge will not only drive economic development along the coast, but also contribute to the protection of local flora and fauna. It demonstrates how canal systems and infrastructure projects can support sustainable urban development and align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals,” said Wissem Moatemri. He believes that we should view canal heritage not just as a memory of the past, but as a bridge to the future—a medium for dialogue among different nations and civilizations. At the event, guests visited the WCCO theme exhibition to learn about the organization’s history and international cooperation achievements. They also toured the World Canal Culture Immersive 3D exhibit, allowing them to experience the beauty of global canals and their contemporary vitality.

The Tunisian young diplomats first opened and read the heartwarming messages left by international students during the “Canal Link” event held in Cangzhou, Hebei. A French student wrote, “Enjoy this wonderful experience fully, and share it with those around you.” These messages reflected the hopes of the international youth from the previous issue, and they also showed that “Canal Link” is not just a slogan, but a continuous global dialogue among young people related to the canal.

With this hope in mind, everyone wrote down their own messages, placed them in the floating bottles, and sealed them away. They waited for future foreign friends to open them and continue passing on those messages. “I only learned about the Grand Canal of China through the Internet before. Today, I finally understood the true meaning of the canal at its source. I’m glad that I got to know the Grand Canal through this activity,” said Maram Bakini.
