Malaysian all-round vocalist Yudi Yap has spent over three decades honing a distinctive velvet voice. She sings, composes, writes, acts and paints; especially adept at Shi Dai Qu, she blends reinvented classics, Shanghai stylings, jazz and modern Nanyang moods—rightly one of Malaysia’s most outstanding singers of singular bearing.
Since 2000 she has deepened her stagecraft: early nostalgia productions, then a decade-long Modern Nanyang series. Her 2013 concert play KOPISUSU swept eight nominations at the Boh Cameronian Arts Awards, winning Best Solo Performer and Best Group/Ensemble; it restaged to acclaim in Singapore the next year. In 2015–17, Springtimes in the Ruins and Modern Grand Hotel crossed into site-specific theatre and talk-sing Nanyang storytelling. In 2018 she appeared on CCTV-4’s Mid-Autumn Gala held in Kuala Lumpur and triumphed at her Esplanade solo concert in Singapore.
Her early “Alternative Music House” chapter flashed early: Best Vocal at Tokyo’s 1991 ""One World college Pop Festival""; the group consecutive "Nanyang Top 10 Star" titles; "Strolling Under the Moonlight" in the" PWH" Awards Top 10. She co-organised twice in the "Halo Songwriting Contest'', co-wrote "Peach Blossoms Blooming" with Ah Niu, and penned "Swaying Skirt-Hem" for Angelica Lee. In 2011 she wrote, composed and sung " Hair and Flower" for drama" The Female Taukeh", won the "Golden TV Award" Best Theme Song; 2020 won "AIM Chinese Music Award" Best Female Singer and Best Music Production(Origin Classics Cat)
She has released six solo and eleven group albums. 2014’s "KOPISUSU "and 2016’s "Jalan Jalan" distilled Nanyang classics; her 2022 YouTube series "A Documentary of Nanyang Oldies" talk & singmapped Malayan music history across the independence era. From local songwriting involvement to the apex of Shine Dai Qu and Nanyang oldies, Yudi’s velvet timbre threads Southern memory with diasporic longing—a cross-generational cultural envoy “Voicing China–Malaysia.” (英文:侯宣羽)
