We live in a world overflowing with information, from news stories and social media posts to videos, trending topics and AI-generated answers. But when information moves this fast, how do we know what to trust? How do we look beyond the headline, question what we see, and make sense of competing messages?

Last month, media and information literacy has been woven into learning across DWA.In library lessons, student-led initiatives, International Understanding classes and the weekly DWA Worldview news broadcast, students are learning to navigate information with greater awareness: asking better questions, evaluating sources and developing perspectives of their own.

Information literacy is not something students are born with. It is a skill they can learn and strengthen over time.

In DWA's library lessons, students tackle real-world research questions and learn how to search effectively, compare sources and evaluate what they find.

As information becomes easier to access but harder to navigate, students are encouraged to ask deeper questions: What information do I actually need? Which sources are reliable? How do different sources shape the way a story is told? And when an answer seems convincing, how can I check whether it holds up?

Finding information is only the beginning. What matters is learning to question it, verify it and decide whether it deserves our trust.

Media literacy comes alive when students lead it themselves.

This month, members of the DWA Round Square Student Committee took media and information literacy beyond the classroom by launching a student-led campus initiative. Working alongside the DWA Kunpeng Ambassadors and Student Volunteer Coordinators, they created opportunities for students to explore questions about information, media, AI and digital communication in ways that felt relevant to everyday life.

At the Jupiter House birthday celebration, for example, a lively quiz made media literacy social, interactive and accessible. Rather than presenting it as an abstract academic topic, the quiz encouraged students to reflect on the choices they make every day: what they notice, what they believe, what they question and what they pass on.

One Student, One Voice: What DWA Students Have to Say

Students were also invited to add their own voices.

Through the "One Student, One Voice" initiative, each student was encouraged to capture one thought in one sentence: What does it mean to make sense of information today? How should we think about AI? What responsibility comes with posting, commenting or sharing online?

A single sentence may seem small, but it can reveal a point of view, spark a conversation or make someone pause and think.

That is where media literacy becomes more than a classroom skill. When students begin to question, respond and express ideas in their own words, they move from consuming information to taking part in the conversations around them.

In doing so, they are not only learning to navigate the media landscape; they are also helping to shape the culture of DWA itself.

From Information to Understanding: Seeing the World from Different Perspectives

Media and information literacy also extends to DWA's International Understanding classes, where students explore how the same issue can look very different depending on where the information comes from, whose voices are heard and what perspective they bring to it.

Through a range of topics and learning activities, students learn to seek out information, compare sources and viewpoints, make sense of what they encounter and communicate their ideas clearly.

Understanding the world is about more than knowing what is happening. It means learning to look beyond a single narrative, recognise different perspectives and gradually form an informed point of view of their own.

From Seeing the World to Sharing the Story: DWA Worldview

国际新闻,让孩子看见更大的世界;

国内新闻,让他们了解正在发生的社会变化;

Every week, DWA Worldview brings current affairs into the rhythm of school life.

With guidance from their teachers, students follow international developments, national news and stories from across the DWA community. They then decide what is newsworthy, organise what they have learned and take the stage to share it with others.

Behind every news story is a process of inquiry: Why is this worth paying attention to? Where does the information come from? Which details matter most? And how can a complex story be communicated accurately and responsibly?

International news helps students look beyond their immediate surroundings and engage with a wider world. National news gives them a closer view of the changes shaping society.

Stories from DWA bring their attention back to the people, events and communities around them. Presenting the news is itself an important part of the learning. Students go beyond receiving information: they select, interpret, organise and communicate it with purpose.

In a world where information is abundant, knowing more is not enough. The real task is learning to make sense of what we see, to think critically when messages compete and to express a considered point of view.

See the world. Question what you hear. Think for yourself. Find your voice. That is the kind of media and information literacy we hope every DWA student carries with them.
