Today we will introduce certain terms on the theme of "Metropolitan Mobility", which is the theme of 2026 No. 3 issue of our journal. And if you are interested in the four papers on the theme, please leave your message.
1
Metropolitan Area
都市圈
In China, according to the Guiding Opinions on Fostering and Developing Modern Metropolitan Areas issued in 2019, this term is defined as an urbanization spatial form centered on a city with more than five million urban residents, or a city with one to five million urban residents and strong radiating and driving effects on surrounding areas, with a one-hour commuting circle as its basic spatial scope.
2
City Cluster
城市群
Linguistically, this term refers to a large-scale urban agglomeration. In China, the national Standard for Basic Terminology of Urban Planning (GB/T 50280–98) defines it as an area where cities are relatively densely distributed. It is distinguished from metropolitan areas by two-hour accessibility instead of one-hour commuting.
3
Four-Network Integration
四网融合
In Chinese context, this term is used to describe the coordinated development of four rail systems, i.e., mainline railways, intercity railways, urban (suburban) railways, and urban rail transit. It was formally incorporated into China’s to support the development of “city clusters and metropolitan areas on rails.” Rather than treating these systems separately, a previous situation due to the departmental division between railway and urban rail transit, four-network integration emphasizes network connectivity, convenient interchange, and, where feasible, through-running operation among the four rail systems through coordinated planning. It reflects China’s effort to build an integrated multi-level rail system that facilitates metropolitan mobility by improving cross-network accessibility and supporting one-hour commuting within metropolitan areas.
