A reckless online challenge has spread from social media to multiple cities, where shared e-bikes are being flipped upside down and left on the ground in copycat acts of vandalism, drawing pushback from police, operators and experts.
Jiangsu media traced the origin to a streamer on a short-video platform who had gained attention for damaging public property and harassing others. Flipping e-bikes upside down became his latest broadcast gimmick. Clips of the act were imitated, eventually copied by users targeting the vehicles.
Li Qiang, who runs a shared e-bike company in Linyi, Shandong province, said his company had received more than 100 reports of inverted e-bikes in recent weeks.
Yu Jixin, a city manager for lifestyle platform Meituan's shared e-bike unit, said similar cases had been found in many cities nationwide. In popular commercial areas, about 100 vehicles a day have been found placed upside down, he said.
Because the sector is asset-heavy and vehicles, frames and batteries are costly, rough handling can lead to malfunctions and damage, Yu added.
Companies now have to assign strong male employees specifically to deal with flipped, stacked and inverted bikes, he said, adding that the work consumes significant time and manpower and disrupts routine maintenance.
Wen Xin, an associate professor at Communication University of China, Nanjing, said the phenomenon reflects how online memes can move from language into behavior.
Overly entertaining, extreme, and vulgar content not only pollutes the internet but also harms young people's expression, habits, and thinking, she warned. She called on platforms to refine recommendation algorithms and actively block the spread of such behavior.
Authorities in several places have begun to respond, including Tiantai in Zhejiang province, Pu'er in Yunnan province, and Tai'an in Shandong province. Tai'an police placed three men under administrative detention on Oct 4 after they drank and, imitating an online video, flipped and kicked shared e-bikes parked along the road.
In a separate case, a man surnamed Li in Gaotang county, Liaocheng, Shandong province, was fined 800 yuan on Oct 9 after he flipped three shared e-bikes upside down before dawn on Oct 4.
