This Saturday the kettle steamed while I opened a UNESCO table instead of the news, and the first thing that caught me was how little, or how much, countries hand over to schools. The world average public spending on education sits near four per cent of GDP, yet Sweden puts down more than seven and Indonesia just above one (UNESCO Institute for Statistics, latest available 2022 to 2023). I have sat through enough classrooms to know the number never tells the whole story, but today the question that rose was not the figure itself. It was whether I am still a student, or only someone who used to be one.

Fluency, the plain ability to get a sentence out before the thought cools, is what a Saturday practice is really for, because the longer read below asks for a steadier hand. The English I drilled years ago is the same English I am drilling now, only the stakes feel larger, and a working adult who keeps at it learns that knowing a word and firing it on demand are two different muscles. The second one is the muscle the weekend keeps alive.

There is a quieter truth under today's chart. The global average years of schooling for adults climbed from about 1.2 years in 1870 to 9.5 in 2024 (Barro-Lee dataset, UNDP Human Development Report 2024), which means my grandmother's world and mine are separated by more than a century of classrooms. And the part I keep returning to is that education does not stop at a diploma. I teach myself Liangzhou studies, the history and geography of my own home, and a foreign language, all at once, because a degree was never the finish line, only a door.

And this is where Liangzhou studies and education meet for me. A place teaches its children through its halls and its teachers, and my home, 武威古称凉州, once ran one of the great academies of the northwest, the 武威文庙, founded in 301 CE, where generations were taught to read the classics and to sit for the exams. To study one's own place, first in one's own tongue and then in others, is the oldest form of education there is. So when the chart says a country spends four per cent on schools, I read it as a question put to me: what am I spending on mine?

Robert A. Heinlein, the same writer I keep quoting, belongs to this conversation too. He listed a barber and a builder and a scholar among the skills a full person should hold, and the through-line is that education is not a room you leave but a net you keep weaving. Specialization is for insects; a mind that keeps learning, in any language, is the opposite.

Today's chart gives me two grammar knots worth unpicking, both genuine IELTS traps around numbers and habit.

• Spend on vs spend in: The government spends four per cent of GDP on education. (spend + 数额 + on + 名词,钱花在「事」上用 on) 而 spend two years in school 用 in 接时段或场所,别混。

• The more ... the more ...: The more a country invests in schooling, the wider its opportunities tend to become.

• Used to / be used to / get used to: I used to think school was the finish line. (used to + 动词原形,表过去习惯;be used to + 动名词,表「习惯于」;get used to 表「渐渐习惯」) 三兄弟是教育话题高频坑。

• Enrolment as a mass noun: Enrolment in tertiary education has risen.

The trick is to match the preposition to the object before the verb, and to keep the two halves of a the-more clause parallel, which is exactly the discipline a chart paragraph demands.

I very like study

I'm really into studying

like 前用 very 是中式直译,really into 才地道;study 作动词用 studying

Study hard is important

Studying hard is important

❌ 中式英语 go to school to read book

✅ 地道表达 go to school to read books

✅ 地道表达 after graduating / after graduation

I have a good study habit

I have a good study routine

❌ 中式英语 open the TV to learn English

✅ 地道表达 turn on the TV to learn English

My English is poor so I can't express

My English is limited, so I struggle to express myself

Same idea, different register; pick the one that fits the room. Each comes with its Chinese so the choice is felt, not just memorised.

• drop out 辍学 → withdraw 退学 / leave school early 提前离校

Each entry carries its root and joins its word family; the Chinese gloss is only a rescue note:

• pedagogy ˈpedəɡɒdʒi n. the art of teaching(教学法): Greek pais, paidos (child) + agein (to lead). Family: paediatric, the medicine of children. The word is a picture of an adult walking a child toward knowledge.

• literacy ˈlɪtərəsi n. the ability to read and write(读写能力): Latin littera (letter). Family: letter, literature, illiterate. Today's chart hides behind this one small word for letter.

• curriculum kəˈrɪkjələm n. the course of study(课程体系): Latin currere (to run). Family: course, current. A curriculum was originally the track a learner had to run, not a stack of handouts.

• enrol ɪnˈrəʊl v. to put one's name on the official list(注册入学): en- (cause to be) + role (the roll, Old French rolle). Family: roll, role. You are not a student until the clerk writes you on the roll.

• tuition tjuˈɪʃn n. the fee for being taught(学费): Latin tueri (to watch over, guard). Family: tutor, intuition, an inner looking. The fee was once the price of being watched over while you learned.

• alumni əˈlʌmnaɪ n. those a school has nourished(校友,复数): Latin alere (to nourish). Family: aliment. A school feeds you for years, and the word remembers the feeding.

• discipline ˈdɪsəplɪn n. a branch of learning; ordered practice(学科、纪律): Latin disciplina (teaching). Family: disciple, a learner; docile, teachable. A subject and self-control grow from the same root of being taught.

• undergraduate ˌʌndəˈɡrædʒuət n. one who holds no degree yet(本科生): under + graduate. Family: graduate, grade (step). The word sits in the gap just before the degree, one step still under the grade.

What a country spends on schools says less about learning than about priorities.(读图价值句,先点出「支出」与「所学」的落差,Task 1 收尾或 Task 2 立论都好用)

例:What Sweden spends on schools says less about learning than about the value it places on it.

The steeper the learning curve, the more a patient learner gains.(2026-10-16 工作期学的 the + 比较级结构,今天换到教育语境:曲线越陡,肯熬的人收得越多)

A significant proportion of GDP goes on education, while only a small fraction is spent elsewhere.(用 proportion / fraction 替 a lot of / a little,书面味更足)

• hit the books:埋头苦读。She had to hit the books before the final exam.(学生口语金句,配 lifelong learning 用)

Learning a language pays dividends for life.(教育话题万能句,呼应「学习是长期投资」)

The new curriculum gave me a steep learning curve.(接今天流利主题:承认曲线陡,是敢开口的第一步)

• school:今日义「学校、上学」;另一常见义「学派、鱼群」,如 go to school 与 the Venetian school of painting / a school of fish。

• degree:今日义「学位」;另一常见义「程度、度数」,如 a bachelor's degree 与 a high degree of risk / thirty degrees。

• subject:今日义「学科、科目」;另一常见义「主语、主题、臣民」,如 my favourite subject 与 the subject of a sentence / a subject of the king。

• class:今日义「班级、课」;另一常见义「阶级、等级」,如 a maths class 与 the working class / first class。

• course:今日义「课程」;另一常见义「一道菜、航向、进程」,如 a course in history 与 the main course / the course of a river。

• major:今日义「主修(动词)、专业(名词)」;另一常见义「主要的、少校」,如 I major in history 与 a major problem / a major in the army。

• graduate:今日义「毕业、毕业生」;另一常见义「刻度的、分度的」,如 graduate from university 与 a graduated cylinder。

• liberal:今日义「通识的(liberal arts 博雅教育)」;另一常见义「思想开明的、自由的」,如 a liberal education 与 a liberal attitude。

Public spending on education is a quiet lesson in what a society values, because the share of national income a government hands to schools ranges far more than most people expect. The world average sits at about four per cent of GDP, yet Sweden devotes over seven and Indonesia just above one, a gap that separates two different worlds of classrooms (UNESCO Institute for Statistics, latest available 2022 to 2023). Behind that gap lies a longer story. Two centuries ago the average adult had barely more than a year of schooling; by 2024 the global mean had reached 9.5 years, and a child entering school today can expect roughly thirteen (Barro-Lee dataset, UNDP Human Development Report 2024). Mass schooling, then, is largely a twentieth-century invention, and the sequence, primary then secondary then tertiary, is still unfolding across poorer regions a few decades behind.

But more money and more years are not the same as more learning. Economists now warn that years of schooling measure time spent inside a building, not what was understood there, and the World Bank's learning-adjusted years of schooling try to correct exactly that. A diploma, in other words, is a door, not a destination. The honest reader of any education chart asks two questions at once: who gets to sit in the room, and what they actually carry out of it. That second question is the one no bar chart can answer, and the one every learner must.

But the deeper question is not only how much a classroom delivers, but what we are actually measuring. Too often education assesses whether a student has completed a course, not whether they have truly learned it, and the two drift apart the moment a test rewards a memorised answer over a genuine one. The old Chinese line draws it cleanly: 学以致用 asks that knowledge be put to use, while 学以致知 asks that knowledge be pursued for its own sake; the first fixes its eye on the answer, the second on the question. A system that only ever counts completions trains people to finish, not to wonder, and a tidy bar chart of spending can hide exactly that gap.

• enrolment: the number of people registered at a school or course.

• expenditure: the act of spending money, formal word for spending.

• attainment: something achieved, especially through effort; educational attainment

• tertiary education: education at university or college level.

• disparity: a big difference between things that should be comparable.

• literacy: the ability to read and write.

Carrying that root educate, to lead a person out of ignorance, one step further, the clearest modern example of schooling built to do exactly that is worth a close look.

The International Baccalaureate began in 1968 under the International Baccalaureate Organisation in Geneva, and it spans the whole school life from age three to nineteen, not a single pre-college sprint. What most people mean by "IB course" is its Diploma Programme, the IBDP, a two-year track for sixteen-to-nineteen-year-olds, but the system as a whole is a connected path. Its founding idea is whole-person education: not merely chasing scores or drilling past papers, but building the habit of thinking, of inquiry, and of seeing the world. Next to AP or A-Level, which run as single-subject exams focused on mastering content and banking marks, the IB is a systemic curriculum that weighs academic result, capacity, and practice together, a fuller set of dimensions. To choose the IB is to choose not a test but a complete international growth system.

The three cores are where the diploma is truly decided, and they are also what selective universities watch. TOK, theory of knowledge, asks students to think about the nature of knowledge itself, to step outside fixed answer patterns and probe where knowledge comes from, how it is reasoned, and where it stops, ending in an essay and a presentation. The EE, extended essay, is a four-thousand-word piece of independent research that previews university writing and trains scholarly self-direction. CAS, creativity, activity, service, demands a fixed span of practice across the arts, sport, and volunteering, building responsibility and breadth. None of the three sits in a single subject score, yet without them there is no diploma at all.

For a student whose first language is not English, the IB raises a strict gate. The literature course asks for close reading of classics such as Hamlet and One Hundred Years of Solitude, analysis that must weave literary theory, cultural context, and authorial intent, and a sound essay there needs a tight logical chain, a demand close to university writing. Add the four-thousand-word extended essay and the load of subject coursework, and the English an IB student must command sits near university level. The gate is high, which is exactly why the programme's graduates leave with a second language of thought.

And the reach of the IB shows up not only in admission but in the longer arc of a life. Tracking studies suggest its graduates adapt better, lead more readily, and carry a wider world view, more of them working across borders or inside international bodies. As the age of artificial intelligence arrives, the very capacities the IB stresses, critical thinking, cross-cultural communication, complex problem-solving, are precisely the human cores machines struggle to replace. This is the same point the chart cannot show and the same reason a curriculum built around asking, not only answering, will outlast the easy answers a machine can now print.

One root pulls a whole net today, and it is the one behind the very word education. Ducere, Latin for to lead, gives us educate, of course, but also conduct, to lead with; introduce, to lead in; produce, to lead forward; and even duke, a leader by title. To educate is literally to lead someone out, which is why the chart above is only the doorway, not the road.

The second net is pais, Greek for child, inside pedagogy and paediatric, the medicine of children, and even the old word paidagogos, the slave who walked the free child to school, from which our word pedagogue descends. A whole vocabulary of child-leading hangs on that one root.

The third net is littera, Latin for letter, which gives literacy, literature, letter itself, and illiterate, the person standing outside the letters. And a fourth hides in plain sight: legere, to read, inside lecture, to read aloud; legend, what is read; and select, to pick out by reading.

Old knowledge resurfacing today, three callbacks, each one a word or a warning I met before and need to keep alive.

From 2026-09-13, the very first weekly test, fluency itself, scored at the bottom of the scale, and the note read that many words I could not even read aloud. That baseline is the reason a Saturday like this exists, to keep the second muscle, firing on demand, from going soft.

From 2026-09-20, the museum piece, the idea that a museum is a school without walls, teaching a city its own past, which is the same claim I am making for Liangzhou studies today, that one's home is a curriculum.

From 2026-09-30, the drill on polysemy, where mean, mode and sample each wore two or three faces, which is exactly why today I still stop and ask which sense a word is wearing before I let it out, school meaning a fish swarm in one sentence and a building in the next.

Ammo, not scripts. Three Part 1 style questions from the current pool, keywords only:

• What do you study? → self-taught Liangzhou studies / more a history person than a campus one / still enrolled in my own way

• Did you enjoy school? → yes, the library more than the hall / some exams drained me / the teachers I kept

• Do you prefer to study alone or with others? → alone with books / a study group for languages / the mix keeps me honest

• Is education important? → yes, it widens the door / not the diploma, the habit / a net, not a room

• Which subject did you like most? → history, then language / geography opened the world / maths I respected but feared

Part 2 cue card(60 秒):Describe a teacher who influenced you. You should say who they were, what they taught, how they taught, and why they mattered.

Keywords(拿「启蒙老师」练):a teacher who saw the point / patience / a single sentence that stuck / taught me to ask / Liangzhou studies started there / lifelong learner.

Three small drills, because naturalness lives in the mouth as much as in word choice.

• Stress: curriculum.

• Stress: literacy.

• Linking: enrol in.

• Confusable pair: taught tɔːt 与 thought θɔːt.

Three short sentences to close the loop, the Latin one pure about teaching. Docendo discimus, by teaching we learn, the oldest line on why a learner should also explain, and the cleanest statement that education runs both ways. The Spanish is Quien lee, viaja, he who reads travels, a line about books as passports, which is exactly what Liangzhou studies became for me. And the French, Apprendre, c'est aussi désapprendre, to learn is also to unlearn, the patience proverb for any adult who goes back to school. All three are short enough to say three times before bed.

Task 1(150 词,20 分钟):The bar chart shows public spending on education as a share of GDP in eight economies, against the world average, in the latest available year, 2022 to 2023. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

• Sweden devoted the largest share, just over seven per cent of GDP, while Indonesia spent the least at 1.3 per cent.

• The world average stood at around four per cent, with most advanced economies clustering between four and six per cent.

• China, at four per cent in 2023, sat close to the global mean rather than among the high spenders.

• Notably, the gap between the highest and lowest spenders exceeded five percentage points.

• Overall, richer economies tended to devote a larger slice of national income to schooling, though spending alone did not guarantee learning.

The bar chart compares public expenditure on education as a share of GDP across eight economies, alongside the world average, in the latest available year, 2022 to 2023. Overall, the figures ranged widely, from just over seven per cent in Sweden to 1.3 per cent in Indonesia, with the global mean sitting at roughly four per cent.

Sweden led the chart at 7.1 per cent, followed by Denmark (6.4) and South Korea (5.8), all well above the average and reflecting the heavy public investment typical of high-income economies. The United Kingdom (4.9) and China (4.0 in 2023) fell close to the world mean, while the average itself clustered most advanced economies between four and six per cent.

At the lower end, Indonesia spent only 1.3 per cent of GDP on education, by far the smallest share and a reminder that national income alone does not decide who gets to learn. The gap between the highest and lowest spenders exceeded five percentage points, though spending, as the data cannot show, is no guarantee of learning.

The chart above measures a society by what it hands to its schools. Ancient Liangzhou, today's Wuwei, would have shown a different ledger, one written in halls and teachers rather than budgets. 武威古称凉州, and at its heart stood the 武威文庙, the great academy of the northwest, the largest of its kind west of the capital, founded in 301 CE, where for over seventeen hundred years the children of Liangzhou were taught to read the classics and to sit for the examinations that could lift a farmer's son into the ranks of the learned. That gate still carries a plaque reading 天下文眀, written by 牛鉴 in 1839, a Liangzhou man who served as tutor to the Daoguang emperor. The phrase was no empty boast; 牛鉴 was said to hold a mind 胸中洞然, clear and free of preconception, a state the Analects traces to Confucius' four negatives, 毋意、毋必、毋固、毋我, to guess at nothing, to fix nothing as absolute, to cling to nothing stubbornly, to centre on nothing as self. To learn without preconception is the oldest form of the questioning this practice keeps alive.

Standing on 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山) today you can still feel that the place was built to teach, the old courtyards and the scholar trees holding the memory of a people who believed schooling was the door, not the ceiling.

And the mountain has already produced one learner whose whole life was education carried across borders. 李自标(1760-1828), a Liangzhou man who grew up under this same 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山), left as a young man to study Latin, Greek and European letters far away in Naples, and came back to serve as an interpreter for the British embassy that reached China in 1793. His was study abroad in its truest form, knowledge packed into a person and walked across continents, a Liangzhou boy who became a bridge between tongues. 姑臧卧龙城 taught its children with brush and bamboo; the same ground later sent one of them to learn the West's languages. The wall between a learner and the world is never the mountain, only the tongue.

Zoom from that mountain out to the whole nation, and China repeats the pattern at full scale. Public spending on education reached about four per cent of GDP in 2023, close to the world average, and the mean years of schooling for Chinese adults climbed past seven, up from barely one or two a century ago (Barro-Lee dataset, UNDP Human Development Report 2024). 我国已建成世界规模最大的教育体系, and the figure backs it up. That national arc of learning, from a few classical halls to near-universal schooling, is the macro edition of what Wuwei began in its academy, the same door opened wider and wider.

And now the question sharpens. In an age of artificial intelligence, an answer arrives in seconds, typed and tidy, yet the passing-on of judgment, the slow craft of knowing what to trust, moves at a human pace. It lives in the unglamorous loop of asking, overturning, experimenting, verifying again, the very loop a real education is meant to rehearse. The leap from solving the set problem to asking the right question is the one that matters most now, because machines can do the first and still stumble on the second. This is also why I have always leaned toward the IB myself, a curriculum with theory of knowledge at its centre, closer to the truth than one built only to rank finishers.

The gap, though, feels personal here. 武威古称凉州, my home, runs no IB-authorised school, a small sorrow I have turned over before, because a place that once taught its children the classics inside the 武威文庙 now has no doorway to this global curriculum. Yet the spirit was never the building. The academy under 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山) trained questioners with brush and bamboo long before TOK had its name, and my own weekly self-study of Liangzhou studies and a foreign language is that same instinct in a different coat. A curriculum is a door; the asking behind it is the room.

What changed is not the mountain but the meaning of a diploma. As economies grow, schooling spreads from a privileged few to nearly everyone, and the question of whether you keep learning after the last exam is exactly the one this practice keeps asking. Wuwei, 武威古称凉州, now pushes its own shift, turning its history into cultural tourism and its stories into things worth studying, so that a local child and a foreign visitor meet over the same page. A herder's grandson and an academy graduate are both students, just chapters of the same book. The mountain asks the same of both: keep the door open after you walk through it.

And this is not a new thought for me; it is the one I live. I still teach myself Liangzhou studies and a foreign language every week, because a degree was never the finish line, only a door. The English I drilled this Saturday is a seed of that same tree; the academy under 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山), the boy who sailed to Naples, the grandmother who never sat in a classroom, are its roots and its branches. 前人栽树,后人乘凉, forebears plant the tree and descendants take the shade.

The wish I carry out of today's practice is a local one, and it is the harder question this chart leaves me. Why is it that ancient Liangzhou, today's Wuwei, a place that once ran the great academy of the northwest and carried a plaque reading 天下文眀, finds it so hard to grow a new, Eastern-shaped version of IELTS, IB PYP, and STREAM curricula, and how might its education break through at all? The past was a high ground of learning; the present is a gap I cannot un-see, because a home that once taught its children the classics now has no doorway to this global curriculum.

The second question is the one with a handle. How does one carry 通识教育, general education in the liberal sense, and STEM, together, to the parents of Wuwei, so that every Liangzhou child can reach first-hand, quality family-learning resources, not the filtered, second-hand scraps that travel slowly inland? A curriculum like the IB, with theory of knowledge at its centre, is worthless if it never reaches the kitchen table, and the doorway is the parent, the first teacher every child has. 通识教育 teaches a child how to think, not what to memorise; STEM, and its wider STREAM cousin with arts and literacy folded in, teaches a child to make and to test. These are the equalisers Wuwei's families deserve without a long wait.

And the motive under all of it is personal, and I will not dress it up. I have stood in the rain myself. 契苾小优, as a child, was short-changed on exactly these resources, and I felt the loss early, before I had words for it. Having been rained on, I now want to hold the umbrella over more people, because I do not want the next generation of Liangzhou children to lose out on education the way I once did, a child who starts behind the door rarely catching the same light once inside it.

The path, then, is not to import a foreign school whole and call it done, but to plant the spirit locally, in coats this century recognises. The academy under 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山) trained questioners with brush and bamboo long before TOK had its name; what Wuwei needs now is the same instinct in new dress, code instead of bamboo, experiment instead of recitation. To make 凉州 great again is to build it back into a high ground of learning for the whole northwest, so that 武威古称凉州 is remembered not only as a 威武之郡, a martial prefecture of old, but as a 天下文眀 seat of letters, a true home of culture and teaching. The mountain has always asked the same question; now the answer, and the umbrella, are in our own hands.
