Some people think news has no connection to people’s lives, so it is a waste of time to read the news in the newspaper and watch television news programs. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
有些人认为新闻与人们的生活毫无关联,所以读报纸上的新闻和看电视新闻节目是浪费时间。你同意还是不同意?
范文及解析
Introduction
Although many people rely on newspaper, television and various virtual media to obtain information and news on what is going on around them or globally, access to news coverage has been criticized for its fruitlessness. In my view, this criticism is oversimplified.
解析
本段译文(translation):
尽管许多人依靠报纸、电视以及各种虚拟媒体来获取身边或全球正在发生的事情的信息和新闻,但获取新闻报道的方式一直受到批评,认为其毫无成效。在我看来,这种批评过于简单化了。
不太常见的词汇(less common lexical items):
❖ news n. 新闻
❖ coverage n. 报道
❖ criticized verb. 批评
❖ fruitlessness n. 无果
❖ criticism n. 批评
Body paragraph 1
Of course, many events involved in news coverage carry little clout over how we make our decisions, health, finances or local environment. Entertainment industry drama, for instance, depicts vivid feuds between singers or celebrities; similarly, sports trivia highlights a player’s trade rumors that never happen or details on a game that one never watch. Essentially, this reflects that it is purely unproductive to delve into the eye-catching contents which will not change anything ordinary do in a week or this year. This pointless news reading is further exacerbated by 24/7 news cycle. To fill every hour, news outlets break news into fragmentations or repeat the same few facts by adding images or speculative comments, creating a meaningless non-stop content pipeline.
❖ news coverage n. 新闻报道
❖ clout n. 影响力
❖ depict verb. 描绘
❖ feuds n. 争执
❖ trivia n. 琐事
❖ trade rumors n. 交易传闻
❖ detail on 详细说明
❖ unproductive adj. 无成效的
❖ delve into 钻研
❖ eye-catching adj. 引人注目的
❖ 24/7news cycle n. 全天候新闻循环
❖ news outlets n. 新闻媒体
❖ fragmentations n. 碎片化
❖ speculative adj. 推测的
❖ non-stop adj. 不间断的
❖ pipeline n. 渠道
Body paragraph 2
Even though much news is irrelevant and distracting, missing quality news will create problems that we cannot afford to fix. Firstly, news facilitates one’s informed decision-making in daily choices. Local transit updates and weather forecast avoid delays, while product recallsand safety alerts allow one to protect family. Instead of being tuned out, people keeping pace with crucial news have greater life quality. Secondly, seemingly complex international news—ranging from tariff disputes to wars—do matter in an indirect manner. For example, a trade war can undermine local factories or farms that export goods, as shrinking orders will cut jobs eventually. In other words, public attentiveness to key news would increase if news outlets feature international events as impacts instead of simply as drama.
❖ distracting adj. 令人分心的
❖ informed adj. 知情的
❖ decision-making n. 决策
❖ transit n. 运输
❖ weather forecast n. 天气预报
❖ product recalls n. 产品召回
❖ safety alerts n. 安全警报
❖ tuned out v. 不理会
❖ keep pace with v. 跟上
❖ seemingly adv. 看似
❖ tariff disputes n. 关税争端
❖ indirect adj. 间接的
❖ undermine v. 削弱
❖ attentiveness n. 专注
❖ feature v. 以…为特色
Conclusion
To conclude, news-avoiders who find news irrelevant and time-wasting should liberate from their bubble, as following the quality news matters.
解析
本段译文(translation):
总之,那些认为新闻与自己无关且浪费时间的避新闻者应该走出自己的小圈子,因为关注优质新闻是很有必要的。
不太常见的词汇(less common lexical items):
❖ news-avoiders n. 回避新闻者
❖ time-wasting adj. 浪费时间的
❖ liberate v. 解放
❖ bubble n. 泡沫
