Hong Kong police have arrested five suspects and recovered 73 gold bars worth about HK$93 million following a brazen daytime robbery at a gold shop in Hung Hom, Kowloon on Friday.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 2 pm at a gold dealer in Peninsula Square on Sung On Street. A male customer was inside with a female staff member when two men and a woman entered the shop. One of the suspects claimed that the shop owner was heavily in debt. The three suspects, together with the customer who was later believed to be involved, then loaded the 73 gold bars, each weighing one kilogram, into a suitcase.
Despite attempts by the female staff member to intervene, the group fled the scene in two private cars driven by another accomplice who had been acting as a lookout.
After receiving a report, officers reviewed CCTV footage and quickly identified the five suspects. Later that evening, they were arrested in Central and Tai Po, where all the stolen gold bars were also recovered.
Chief Inspector Yau Yu-sing of the Regional Crime Unit of West Kowloon confirmed that all the gold had been recovered.
