The Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area has dismissed a viral video claiming that its famous turquoise lakes are artificially colored, calling the video a fabrication. In a statement released on Wednesday, the scenic area said the video misleads the public and harms its reputation.
As a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site and World Biosphere Reserve, the park's iconic blue-green waters are the result of natural geological and optical processes, rather than any artificial coloring or human intervention.
To explain the science behind the phenomenon, Sun Geng, a researcher at the Chengdu Institute of Biology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said the lakes' striking colors are produced by a combination of physical, chemical and biological factors.
From a physical perspective, the lakes are fed by exceptionally pure water from high-altitude sources, containing very few suspended particles or plankton. The water's remarkable clarity allows sunlight, which contains the full spectrum of visible light, to penetrate deeply. Longer wavelengths such as red and orange are absorbed, while shorter wavelengths such as blue and violet are scattered, making the water appear blue.

Chemically, the water is rich in calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate ions, which form microscopic travertine particles that further scatter blue-green light and enhance the lakes' vivid colors.
Biological factors also contribute. Algae and other aquatic organisms reflect light in different ways, adding depth and subtle variation to the water's appearance.
Water depth, seasonal changes, weather conditions, and even the viewing angle all influence how the colors are perceived, creating the lakes' ever-changing shades of blue and green.
