A clip from a Taiwan talk show has drawn ridicule on social media after a guest made the outlandish claim that Beijing lacks refrigerators and that hotels in the capital don't serve chilled drinks.

"Beijing didn't have refrigerators. Hotels didn't have them either," a guest asserted during the show. "People there didn't drink cold beverages." The absurd remark was met with immediate mockery. "Is this person living in the last century?" One netizen quipped, expressing their disbelief.

This is far from the first time that certain Taiwan media outlets have peddled wildly inaccurate stereotypes about life on the mainland. Previous gems have included claims that mainland residents "can't afford tea eggs", "can't afford pickled mustard tubers", and that "high-speed trains have no backrests".

In stark contrast to these absurd narratives, China's home-appliance sector — particularly cooling products like air conditioners, refrigerators, and electric fans — has been thriving both domestically and internationally. In July, Lyu Daliang, spokesperson for the General Administration of Customs and director of its Statistics and Analysis Department, revealed that exports of these appliances totalled 107.9 billion yuan in the first half of the year, helping to meet the needs of households worldwide amid scorching summer heat.
