As long ago as the fourteenth century, an Englishman, Sir John Hawkwood, made the remarkable discovery that people would rather pay large sums of money than have their life work destroyed by gangsters.
早在14世纪,英国人约翰.霍克伍德就有过非凡的发现:"人们情愿拿出大笔的钱,也不愿毕生的心血毁于歹徒之手.

（1）as long ago as与as long as
as long ago as是时间状语，表示“早在….”。而as long as则表示“只要”这两个词组不要搞混。
I knew him as long ago as the year 2000.
在使用as long ago as后，后面接的时候就不要再加上介词in了，也就是说，不能写成as long ago as in the year 2000.（错）
Just as long as it's the truth. 只要是事实。
（2）would rather … than … 宁可…也不…
在表示“宁可…也不”时，同样的表达可采用prefer to … rather than来替换，但在使用时需要注意有一点不同。在使用prefer to时，后面接的是to do不定式，比如：
She prefers to work rather than remain idele. 她宁愿工作也不愿闲着。
would rather 和 would sooner 一样都可以表示宁愿。
在使用时，应该注意。
① 两者后的动词均使用原型
He would rather go by car. 他宁愿坐汽车。
② 两者可以接从句，表示宁愿某人做…
I would rather Tom left on an earlier train. 我宁愿Tom乘前一班火车走。
