Trump is condemned for WHO funding freeze
Late on Tuesday Trump declared US funding would be put on hold for 60-90 days pending a review “to assess the World Health Organization’s role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus”. The US is the single largest contributor to the WHO. Richard Horton, the editor-in-chief of the Lancet medical journal, wrote that Trump’s decision was “a crime against humanity … Every scientist, every health worker, every citizen must resist and rebel against this appalling betrayal of global solidarity.” Antonio Guterres, the UN secretary general, said it was “not the time” to cut funding or to question errors. “The lessons learned will be essential to effectively address similar challenges, as they may arise in the future. But now is not that time … It is also not the time to reduce the resources for the operations of the World Health Organization or any other humanitarian organization in the fight against the virus.”

Obama endorses Biden for president

Former President Barack Obama delivered his long-awaited endorsement of Joe Biden for president on Tuesday, recording an 12-minute video to throw his support behind his former vice president. Mr. Obama’s endorsement of his former vice president comes a day after Senator Bernie Sanders gave a full-throated endorsement of Biden’s presidential bid, ending speculation that the two rivals might remain at odds going into the general election season. “I’m so proud to endorse Joe Biden to be president of the United States,” Mr. Obama said. “Choosing Joe to be my vice president was one of the best decisions I ever made, and he became a good friend. And I believe Joe has all the qualities we need in a president right now.” (cbsnews)

University expelled a student who brutally killed stray cats
On Wednesday evening, Shandong University of Technology expelled a student who brutally killed stray cats and shared disturbing videos of his acts online. The videos are no longer available, but according to a report in Beijing News, the cats were flogged, burned alive or given electric shocks. A cropped video clip in the report showed something red, possibly the flesh of a tortured cat. Some reports suggested he might have been selling the videos online. The university launched a joint investigation with the police after someone reported the case on social media on April 8. The authorities zeroed in on the student, who has since received psychological counseling. It is not clear if he will be punished, as there is no law prohibiting killing of animals that are not on the protected list; but he could land in trouble for sharing videos of the brutal killings online.

Protesters Gather to Defy Stay-at-Home Orders
As President Trump and some of his supporters push for a more rapid return to pre-coronavirus economic activity, protesters in several states took to the streets this week to urge governors to relax the strict rules on commerce, work and daily life that health officials have said are necessary to save lives. A group of more than 100 protesters converged on Huntington Beach on Friday in a demonstration against California’s coronavirus stay-at-home rules, part of a series of national demonstrations organized by conservative groups. The protesters — some with Trump banners and American flags — mostly were not wearing masks or practicing social distancing by standing at least six feet apart. And they offered views about the spread of the coronavirus that differed sharply from scientific findings and experts’ recommendations. (nytimes, latimes)
