词缀是前缀、后缀、中缀的总称。它是加在词基上以构成新词干(Stem)的词素,或是提供屈折成分的词素

-ness抽象名词后缀,意为:state,quality,加在形容词之后,构成抽象名词,表示性质、情况、动作、质量或状态。

例如:

effortlessness

毫不费力(making no effort),前缀ef=ex=out,fort=strong

She plays with seemingly effortless skill.(她演奏得似乎毫不费力。)

shamelessness

不知羞耻,无耻(effrontery,immodesty)

In a display of utter shamelessness,he pulledout several $100 bills and began waving them in their faces.(他完全不知羞耻,掏出几百元大钞在他们面前挥舞。)

-ite是个直接来自法语的名词后缀。它有两种作用:

1、加在名词后面表示人,这时,它有aninhabitant of ~ (...的居民),a descendant of ~(...的后代),a follower of ~(...的追随者),a person associated with ~(与...有关的人)等意思。

2、加在名词词根后面表示物,amineral species (矿物),a fossil (化石),an explosive (炸药),a chemical product (化工产品)等意思。

exquisite

形容词、动词、名词后缀ish意为:like,retating to,make。

一、形容词后缀

(1)加在名词后,表示如...的;似...的;有...的性质的。

amateurish

adj.外行的,业余的;不熟练的(inexpert,imperfect)

The tourist made a rather amateurishattempt to negotiate with the shopkeeper.(游客很外行地与店主讨价还价。)

bookish

adj.书的;学究的;爱好书籍的(of booksand studies)

He was always a bookish kid ,so i'm notsurprised he's professor now.(他以前就是个爱读书的孩子,所以他现在当教授我一点也不惊讶。)

(2)加在形容词之后面,表示含有某种程度的、略...的、稍...的

coldish 略寒的,稍冷的;

greenish 略带绿色的;

warmish 稍暖的;

oldish 略老的,稍旧的;

表示某国的或某民族的,兼表某国的语言

English 英国的,英语;

Swedish 瑞典的,瑞典语;

flourish

v.茂盛;繁荣 (极度地夸耀)(grow in ahealthy manner;prosper)

后缀-ion含义、词源和例词

-ion来源于拉丁语,只能加缀在拉丁动词词干或拉丁借词上,构成相应的名词,其意思相当于the act or process of ~,the result of ~ing,the condition of being ~ed,a thing that~s等,即表示某一动作过程、结果与状态,以及与该行为有关的事物。由于拉丁构词规律的影响,-ion有-ation,-ition,-ution等异体,但它们的用法与意义与-ion并无区别。
