Dear Reader,

Much of the time I hate to read. It’s the truth. I get impatient.

其实大部分时候，我都讨厌阅读，真的，我会没有耐心。

The information just need to get in my head fast and reading takes too long. Shouldn’t there be faster way?

阅读需要花费很多时间，难道真的没有更迅速有效的获取信息的方法吗？

After all, letters are just arbitrary squiggles that put together make-up words, which are also arbitrary. (Like why should chaise or chair mean this thing I’m sitting on?)

毕竟，单词是由字母随意组合起来的，是任意的。（就像“chaise”或“chair”都代表这个我正坐着的东西，不是吗？）

And so each arbitrary word is like an elaborate husk that the eyes and brain have to crack open to extract out meaning. It’s tedious.

每个由字母随意组合成的单词仿佛都有着一个复杂的外壳，我们的眼睛和大脑需要开壳提取它的含义，这有点乏味。

Just plug a cable into the back of my head, like Neo. Honestly, I often think this.

But the other day, I was reminded of what we’d lose when the head plug comes along.I was reading a book to my four year old.

It’s a book that 52% baffles him and 48% delights called 《Moomintroll, Mymble and Little My》. And it’s finished by a Finnish author, Tove Janson, who I am now convinced is a towering genius on the level of Einstein.

那是一本让他52%困惑和48%快乐的书，名字叫做《Moomimtroll, Mymble and Little My》，作者是芬兰作家Tove Janson：一个在我看来和爱因斯坦一样的天才。

Nothing makes logical sense in this book. The characters are always the same, but on page 1…they wander through a forest.

这是一本没有逻辑的书，人物从头到尾都是一样的。比如第一页是他们在穿过一片森林。

Page turn. Now they’re drinking tea with a hundred electric worms. Every page turn is whiplash.

翻到下一页，他们在跟上百只的蠕虫在喝茶。每翻一页，仿佛就是一个新的世界。

The only thing that connects one world to the next desires that Tove Janson thought them up is that she cut holes in every page.

Little wormholes that let you peek forward to the next page. Each page contains a portal.

孩子通过这些“小虫洞”猜测和期待下一页的内容，就像是一道道门。

This simple fact account for most of his 48%. But as we turned the pages and slipped through portals and got to the final page, I thought, he is a new person now.

这些小虫洞组合起来就是我前面提到的「48%的快乐」。当他一页页翻着时，他就像是在通过一道道的门，每一次都是一个新的开始、新的自己。

It occurs to me that every good book is like this. A self-transcending structure. So we read it again.
