The request was sent by the government to the US and the UN, but the US says it has no plans to offer military assistance "at this time".
Haitian police earlier said a group of 28 foreign mercenaries killed the president on Wednesday.
After a gun battle in the capital Port-au-Prince, 17 of them were detained.

Sebastian had followed his father's footsteps and become a professional boxer.
The British middleweight Eubank Snr said he and his family were "devastated" to hear of his son's death in Dubai, where he lived.
And Chris Eubank Jnr tweeted: "Sorry I wasn't there to watch your back like a big brother's supposed to."

No official death toll has been given but local media reports say more than 10 people have been killed since the fighting began on Wednesday.
Hundreds of officers have been deployed to seize weapons and search for gang leaders, who have been seeking to expand their territory.
One local resident said the recent violence was "like a war".

President Joe Biden has told President Vladimir Putin the US will take "any necessary action" to stop cyber-attacks from Russia, the White House says.
A reporter asked Mr Biden after the hour-long phone call if Russia would face consequences, and he said: "Yes."
But Moscow denied US claims they had contacted the Russians repeatedly about the cyber-attacks in the past month.
Friday's call between Mr Putin and Mr Biden follows their meeting last month in Geneva.
