Hireath (An Englyn)

stone bridge bisects valley—boundless patch

thatch, stitch, echoes carry

over to a tired estuary

hedgerows are a rubbed poultice on old road wounds

marred dead runes—all the gone

violet terminus shone

nearby, sisyphys scales down his cloud in proud amnesia trails

goes this antichthon mass

scarred Wales

Note:

Hireath (‘hEer-rIth) is a Welsh word that has no direct English translation. It can be likened to a homesickness tinged with grief and sadness over the lost or once imagined (that which might have been), especially in the context of Wales and Welsh culture.
