01

Tube-Shaped Apartment Building (筒子楼)

Being a specific type of apartment building that was popularly built in Chinese cities in the 1960s and 1970s under the circumstance of planned economy, the tube-shaped apartment building is spatially characterized by the layout of a long corridor with rooms evenly distributed on its both sides. The uniform rooms were quite small, only a dozen square meters, and were only used for individual apartment and public toilets, while the long corridor was often used as kitchen. As a result, the living quality as whole was usually low and in degradation.

02

Trans-Asian Railway Corridor (泛亚铁路廊道)

It refers to the regional railway network initiated by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) to connect Europe and Asia. Its Southeast Asian section of about 13,640 km long that comprises the Eastern, Central, and Western lines enhances the connectivity of China with Southeast Asia to foster an economic and trade conduit in the region. Up to now, the completion of the Central line, known as the Laos-China Railway, has substantially improved the regional transportation and stimulated growth in logistics and tourism.

03

Science and Technology Innovation Corridor (科创走廊)

It refers to a kind of development area that is intentionally created with the ambition of concentrating innovative elements, high-level talents, and emerging industries for regional development. It is usually laid out along main urban arteries, providing crucial support for innovation and development. In China, this terminology was firstly used to describe the international experience of this kind in the United States, such as the Silicon Valley in California and the Massachusetts Route 128 around Boston. It was then often taken as a model for inter-regional cooperation among multiple cities. Currently, there are more than 20 science and technology innovation corridors officially established by local governments, including the most important three of the Yangtze River Delta G60, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao, and Beijing-Xiong'an science and technology innovation corridors.
