Ballast water treatment system -
Part 2: Electrolytic method

1 Scope

This document specifies the classification and treatment rated capacity, requirements, test methods, installation requirements, inspection rules, and marking, packaging, transportation and storage of ballast water treatment system by electrolytic method.

This document applies to the design, manufacture, installation and inspection of the ballast water treatment system by electrolytic method (hereinafter referred to as the “treatment system”).

3 Terms and definitions

For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 43330.1-2023 and the following apply.

3.1
electrolytic method
a method in which an electrochemical reaction occurs on the surface of an electrode by applying a direct current and generates active substances for ballast water treatment

3.2
electrolysis unit
unit consisting of single or multiple electrolyzers that generates active substances for ballast water treatment by the electrolytic method (3.1)

Note: This unit also includes a ventilation module (if any) for the safe disposal of the hazardous gases generated, as well associated pipe fittings, valves, electrical and electronic components, etc.

neutralization unit
unit mainly consisting of neutralizing agent preparation and dosing equipment that doses neutralizing agent into the pipeline to neutralize active substances

treatment rated capacity
maximum continuous treatment capacity of a ballast water treatment system

3.5
gasdetector
detector used for monitoring explosive and/or toxic gases (e.g., hydrogen, hydrocarbon gases, ozone, chlorine dioxide, etc.) that are harmful to the crew and/or ship

3.6
total residual oxidants; TRO
sum of the content of ions and compounds such as hypochlorous acid (HCIO), hypochlorite (ClO-), chlorine (Cl2), hypobromous acid (HBrO), hypobromite (BrO-), bromine (Br2), ozone (O3), hydroxyl radicals, chloroamine compounds, and bromoamine compounds, which is converted into the content of Cl2

4 Classification and treatment rated capacity

4.1 Classification

The treatment system is classified into the main circuit treatment system and the branch circuit treatment system according to whether all the ballast water flows through the electrolysis unit.

4.2 Treatment rated capacity

The treatment rated capacity of the treatment system should conform to the requirements of Table 1.
