(Badi He)
Badi

This summer, Daystar’s 2024 high school graduates completed their studies and left our campus to embark on their own journeys. In the eyes of their teachers, they are a cohort of students with consistent performance – their academic achievement is excellent, they are reliable, they have great ideas and unique personalities, and they are polite and gracious.
Due to limited space in the Graduates column, we can only introduce two of them. However, all seven of our other graduates, like these two teenagers, are outstanding and represent Daystar well. We will miss all of them!
Badi He (贺之阳)
Entered Daystar Academy in the First Grade.
Admitted to the departments of International Relations, Politics or Political Science at world-famous universities such asthe University of Washington, The Ohio State University, Boston University, University College London, Manchester University and King's College London.
A year ago, at the 2023 high school graduation ceremony, Badi, as the representative of the 11th grade students, delivered a speech to the senior students who were about to leave the school.
He began by reading from his prepared script, expressing his admiration for Daystar’s first class of graduates, and then, suddenly, he tore it up and said with a smile: “I’d like to say something from the bottom of my heart, instead of reading this piece of paper!”
The audience burst into laughter.
A year later, recalling the scene, Ms. Liu Hui - Badi’s Elementary School Chinese Teacher—couldn't help but laugh: “That was impressive!” In that one action, Badi exhibited the traits he is most known for: spontaneity and sincerity.
Hard-working Student
Ms. Liu Hui taught Badi for three years. In her memory, Badi then was different. He was very quiet when he was a child.
“He was not a talker,” she says.
He was surrounded by exceptionally smart classmates who were eager to express themselves, but he wasn't that type of student.
“Although he didn’t do anything as fast as those students, he knew himself very well. For example, if he failed to write a good essay, he knew where he messed up and why he didn’t write it well.” said Ms. Liu. Since those days, Badi grew into a dedicated scholar who easily kept up with his gifted classmates.
Having a clear understanding of himself is a distinct characteristic of Badi’s personality.
Ms. Zhou, who taught him DP Biology, praised Badi: “He never forgot his homework and managed his learning very well. He maintained a good attitude about learning and adjusted to the pressure of learning on his own. If you assign him a task, though he would silently finish it without calling attention to himself, he is a very hardworking student.”
Thinking about what shaped his character, Badi identified two factors:First, at home, his parents gave him ample opportunities to think and reflect, and second, the school also gave him enough freedom to explore and determine the direction he wanted to take.“Every night I would spend 20 minutes chatting and communicating with my parents, and we kept doing so every day for many years; at school, teachers also respect and encourage our choices, giving us the space and freedom to try,” he said.
Bloomed into Natural Brilliance
Badi’s experiences at Daystar exemplify the notion of waiting for flowers to bloom at an appropriate speed:Both his family and his school provided ample nutrients to support and educate him, watering him slowly as he bloomed into his natural brilliance.
Over the past ten years, Badi steadily accumulated experiences, with his “Daystar characteristics” becoming increasingly prominent.
He loves sports including playing basketball and soccer; he is eager to help classmates, showing politeness; he is slightly shy, yet optimistic and cheerful; he develops strongly, gaining momentum, until, without recognition, he accomplishes remarkable achievements.
Tearing up the script at last year's graduation ceremony was an example of making a splash. “I designed that part,” he admitted, “I estimated in advance at which stage I could tear up the script.”
Dream for Future
Badi says that he wants to become an IB teacher, teaching Humanities in the future. He is quite firm with this idea, which stems from his interest in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
He said that studying Philosophy and Economics during his DP years made him realize that using the past and history as a mirror could help one understand the present and predict the future, and that the current trends in world development can be found from past historical and political knowledge. His university applications focused on majoring in International Relation or Politics, reflecting this awareness.
He also enjoys communicating with people. Mr. Darcy Au-Yeung is Badi's homeroom teacher as well as his Economics and TOK teacher. He chats with Badi frequently, and said: “Badi is very confident when communicating with others.”
The purpose of applying what you have learned and done to the development of society runs through Daystar's educational mission, as well as Badi's family’s values. His mother is the founder of a charitable organization that provides education to disabled orphans and children in need.
Badi was doing service in spare time.
Influenced by his family, his school, and his personal interests, Badi is very clear about his future direction.
He will devote himself to a gap year of service before entering university to go to Malaysia to teach and visit the youth and to serve in local community.
We randomly asked Badi a question to see how much he overlapped with how others describe him as a “good communicator and having a good grasp of himself.”
“Do you know what advice Mr. Darcy has for you?”
Almost without thinking, he said, “He would hope I won’t be too sure of certain goals and limit possibilities for future development.”
Perfect! Full marks! This is Badi. Whatever you say, he understands the context in seconds, and sees the whole picture.
