物性与神思
余力的架上综合材料绘画作品

画家余力创作的以海派风情和怀旧情感为题材的架上综合材料绘画作品,通过光影与色彩的幻化与魅惑,以诗性抽象的造性语汇,藉助陶土、咖啡渣、亚麻和真丝纤维,以及油画颜料等综合绘材的物性加持,在魔幻般的神思中,把架上综合绘材,幻化成华夏文明与海派文化的前世今生,幻化成瑰丽谲奇的二度半艺术空间。

余力创作的综合绘材架上作品,以动态化的表现视角,把绘画质材的物性转化为画家神思的延伸,转化为画家精神内涵的物化。画面上油画顏料的粘稠质地与咖啡残渣等粉状媒材,以及丝麻纤维与陶瓷光滑莹洁的釉面,混合堆砌成新的架上绘画综合质材,通过不规则的颗粒状纹理堆砌与皱褶所形成的色彩肌理固化,构成颇具立体感的视觉图象。如他创作的《海派风情》系列作品,通过感官的漫步式体验,在色彩与肌理营造的二度半艺术空间中,表现老上海都市风貌中被遗忘的城市记忆,表现诺曼底公寓等历史风貌建筑,把霞飞路上的法式浪漫演绎得淋漓尽致。

余力的作品,游弋在雕塑与绘画之间。他以极端的语言形式,构建成立体视觉的解读空间,把绘画的边界推向极致,画面充满了物性的感觉与升华。作品在物性与神思中,以独特的图像视觉方式,表现多种质材、多种技法、多元文化日趋混同的当下语境,成为文化消费环境中新的兴奋点,成为余力综合绘材作品创作的美学支点。如他创作的《魅惑花语》系列作品,胶质颜料通过刷帚与刮刀的参与,在丝麻纤维上恣意地平涂和堆垜,把充满金色希望的秋之魅在画面上交响乐般地奏响。

余力的综合绘材当代艺术作品,通过解构、重组、间离、炫彩等非具象语汇,通过对现实场景的“陌生化“再构建,以独特的美术语汇构架和富有表现力的风格,决破了传统架上绘画内向与闭合的文化品格;画面充满了神秘的幻象感和与众不同的色彩呈现。如他创作的《故都秋韵》系列作品,色彩肌理通过画家感性的选择,被过滤在当代艺术的语境中。画家通过视觉经验与观念物化,以形态融合的多元化表达,解析”物“的文化价值,解析“紫禁城“寥落行宫的历史隐喻与时代反思。

画家余力在全球化的开放语境中,借鉴日本当代艺术流派——"物派”的创作理念:以物质为基础,运用综合质材创作作品,在时间和空间的不定点上“寻求相遇”,强调画家自身的体验。他以东方美学的神思,通过架上综合绘材的物性,承载起艺术家神思与绘画质材物性的双重世界和多维表达。

—— An Analysis of Yu Li’s Mixed-Media Paintings

The mixed-media paintings of Yu Li, which explore themes of Shanghai-style sentiment and nostalgic emotions, going through the transformation and allure of light and color, utilizing a poetic and abstract language with creation and supported by the material properties of mixed media such as clay, coffee grounds, linen, silk fibers,oil paints and etc, the magical and spiritual process transforms these mixed media matters into a visualization of both the ancient and modern aspects of Chinese civilization and Shanghai culture, creating a splendid and mysterious 2.5D artistic space."

Yu Li's mixed-media paintings on canvas utilize a dynamic perspective, transforming the material properties of the painting medium into an extension of the artist's imagination and a materialization of his spiritual essence. The thick texture of the oil paint, combined with powdered materials like coffee grounds, as well as the integration of linen, silk fibers, and the smooth, glossy glaze of ceramics, amalgamate into a new kind of mixed medium for canvas painting. This medium, through the build-up of irregular granular textures and the solidification of folds into color textures, forms a highly three-dimensional visual image. For instance, in his series "Shanghai Style"(Hai Pai Feng Qing), through a sensory and meandering experience, he recreates forgotten urban memories of old Shanghai within the 2.5D space formed by the interplay of colors and textures. His works vividly depict historical landmarks like the Normandy Apartments, and bring to life the French romanticism of the iconic Avenue Joffre(now Middle Huaihai Rd).

Yu Li's works hover between painting and sculpture. By employing an extreme visual language, he constructs a space for three-dimensional interpretation, pushing the boundaries of painting to their limits and the canvas is filled with a sense of materiality and its subsequent sublimation. His work, which integrates diverse materials, techniques, and cultures, resonates within the contemporary cultural context, becoming a new focal point in cultural consumption. This aesthetic foundation can be seen in his series "Enchanting Floral Whisper"(Mei Huo Hua Yu) , where gelatinous pigments, applied with brushes and scrapers onto linen fibers, evoke the shining hope of autumn in a symphonic manner.

In his contemporary mixed-media paintings, Yu Li deconstructs, reconstructs, distances, and dazzles with a non-representational vocabulary. Through the "defamiliarization" of real scenes, his works break away from the traditional introversive nature of painting by using a unique artistic language and an expressive style. The canvases exude a mysterious and phantasmagoric allure, with colors presented in an unconventional manner. In his series "Autumn Rhythms of the Ancient Capital"(Gu Du Qiu Yun), the textures of color are filtered through the artist's sensitive choices and recontextualized within a contemporary art framework. By integrating personal vision and materialization of perspectives, Yu Li explores the cultural significance of objects, decoding historical metaphors and reflections through the times of the Forbidden City’s deserted palace.

Yu Li draws inspiration from the globalized and open art world, particularly from Japan's contemporary "Mono-ha" movement, which emphasizes the interaction of materiality and time-space encounters. This movement seeks a moment of "encounter" in undefined points of time and space, emphasizing the artist's personal experience. Through the spiritual lens of Eastern aesthetics, Yu Li's works balance the dual worlds of artistic conception and materiality, offering a multi-dimensional expression that bridges the artist's spiritual thought and the physicality of painting.
