You might easily find yourself lost after entering Maquanying Village in Beijing's Chaoyang District. Identical rows of houses are laid out in a grid-like pattern. Unless you are a regular, it can be hard to place where you are.

However, if you ask a local, “Where is the Tongxin Library?”you will surely get an answer.

Tongxin Library is a reading space for thousands of residents and an activity center for nearly eight hundred children. The library serves as acultural landmarkin the area.

The first Tongxin Library opened in Maquanying in November, 2022. On October 19, 2024, with the support of many community members, including members from Daystar community, the second Tongxin Library opened in District 1 of Maquanying Village, providing an even larger space for reading and activities.

Wang Bo is the visionary who founded both Tongxin Libraries, bringing the library model from Pi Village, in the outskirts of Beijing, to Maquanying.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, while still in Pi Village, Wang watched as children were not able to attend school, and many mothers confined at home were eager to learn new skills and knowledge. He noticed that parents began meeting at the library to organize and run activities. The Pi Village Library quickly transformed into a popular, shared space for children to study and collaborate.

In 2023, Wang decided to expand the library concept to other urban villages, believing that “there are many migrant workers in Beijing who need such resources.”

He found the locations, spent 2-3 months on renovations, and raised funds through work and support from dozens of relatives and friends. That year, Tongxin Library opened in Maquanying.

With book lending, film screenings, and family activities, Tongxin Library aims to serve the thousands of residents and hundreds of children in the area, as well as reach neighboring villages.

Libraries, however, often exist apart from the daily necessities of life. What is the future direction? Wang doesn’t have a definitive answer.

But valuable initiatives always find ways to be shared and noticed.

Enthusiastic support for Tongxin also comes from the nearby Daystar community:

He personally volunteered and guided children in participating in a "Scouts" camping activity, teaching them camping skills. To support the new library, he provided substantial funding and construction support. Ma Xiaoyi, designer of the Daystar D+ Theatre also contributed to the space design for free for the new library.

Reading Club

Li Jie, father of student Austin Li from Beigao Campus, learned about Tongxin Library through social media and visited that same day. “Service is a critical part of Daystar’s core values. Inspired by this, my family and I have been exploring ways to create a learning community. Every Friday evening at Tongxin Library, I gather with families from Maquanying to read books on family virtues, and we also meet monthly to read poetry. ” Li Jie shared.

Donation

Austin Li himself chose to focus on supporting Tongxin Library for his fifth-grade PYP exhibition. He created a display about the library project and organized book and donation drives at school, ultimately raising half a month’s rent and seven boxes of books for Tongxin.

Reading Package

Lucy Wang, a 2023 high school graduate of Daystar, contributed to two projects. In 11th grade, she helped plan the indoor spaces of the original Tongxin Library, focusing on layout, decoration, and book storage. After graduating, she continued her involvement by designing reading packages for younger children. Now studying in the UK, Lucy said, “Tongxin Library connects many people and prioritizes children’s experiences—it’s an amazing project!Seeing my designs in use at the library gives me immense satisfaction and fulfillment!

According to Temily Tavangar, Social Innovation Director at Daystar, supporting Tongxin is not just a service project; it’s an empowering initiative that has a profound impact on the Maquanying community.

The new Tongxin Library plans to offer open services for early childhood. We invited Mr. Wang to visit Daystar Early Learning Center to learn about Montessori education methods and inspire their own approach,” Temily noted.

“The children in the Maquanying community have a need for English learning, and we are very willing to share our resources to support Tongxin. We welcome anyone who feels inspired to join us!”

On the wall of the old Tongxin Library is a quote of Gabriel Garcia Marquez: “I was young, I was down and out, I was happy, and I loved life deeply.”

This quote seems to be written for Tongxin Library, encouraging us to uphold the principles of social innovation—the process of identifying and solving problems might not always be smooth or easy, but by stepping up to meet these challenges, we gain profound and lasting fulfillment.

Tongxin Library is modest in size, yet it has brought together the active support of multiple community resources, including Daystar. Tongxin is grounded in its service to the surrounding community; the sincerity of its work shines with a vibrant authenticity that is further illuminated by the collective efforts of all who are involved!
