Seeking a random travel pal at your destination via social media has become an in-vogue tourism trend among young Chinese adults.

“Most of the posts I’ve seen are females seeking a female ‘travel pal’, listing requirements such as a good temper, being patient when taking photos at tourism spots, and knowledge of the destination’s good restaurants and cafes,” said Liu Chenmin, a 26-year-old from Beijing. “Some of the pal seekers offer service fees for the pals, while others state in the post that they can cover the food and transport fees. The pal, from my perspective, is like a self-employed or flexible tour guide, but they offer more emotional value during the trip than professional guide services,” she said, adding that this way of traveling is novel but comes with inherent risks.

However, experts have called for platforms and government bodies to take more action to protect people online and to prevent predatory behavior.

Wang Wenda, director of the college student psychological health education research office at Xinhua College, Ningxia University, said that seeking a random travel pal at a destination is attractive to people who need companionship but are not sociable or good at dealing with close social relationships. “Some young people face increasing work and life pressure, and they may lack effective and close social relationships, which may lead to great loneliness,” he said, adding that a random travel pal can offer continuous companionship during the trip, while short-term relations in between won’t cost follow-up time or efforts to maintain.

“It’s understandable that young people wish to have a better traveling experience with a pal of his or her age, who have common interests, characteristics or traveling preferences. People may feel lonely and may encounter some inconveniences when traveling alone,” said Wei Changren, founder of btiii.com, a tourism-related financial news website.
“We can’t ignore the emotional value offered by these pals, but their guiding services may not be as professional as trained tour guides. Also, trained and registered tour guides are usually a part of companies or agencies, which is a safer choice to individual travelers,” he said, adding that the nation regulates that people who offer tour guide services on the Chinese mainland should be certified.
