CHAPTER 2
GROWTH COACHING-STANDING ON THE STARTING LINE
Constant pressure, intense competition, the need to always be the best: the parallels between the world of sports and the world of business are undeniable and plenty. I, for one, have spent a large part of my life living in these two seemingly distinct but similar worlds. And through my journey, I have realized that there is a whole lot that businesses can learn from sports. For that reason alone, I can say without an ounce of doubt that we can all start-in business as in sports-by getting ourselves a coach. And this very thought, might I add, has been the genesis of the Growth Coaching Program.
As a young man I spent endless hours in the gym aspiring to become an Olympic gymnast, What I learned the hard way was the enormous complexity of what it takes to become an Olympic gymnast. So many elements must come together in order to create a platform to produce an Olympic class gymnast, When all the components come together in the right way it seems like the world has produced yet another gymnast through magic, Later as a gymnastics coach I realize that all of these inputs were required to create a platform for a great Olympic gymnast. It was a far more complex environment than I was ever aware before. As a Growth Coach it is important that we realize the complexity of what we are addressing. We must be aware of all the input elements into the strategy and how they are combined in an optimal way to drive transformational growth.
Maximizing your Future Growth potential, and working on all of the key elements that drive this, is now more important than ever. In the case of gymnastics, the sport has evolved to include psychology, physiology genetics, nutrition, emotional intelligence, physics, sleep, and many other elements that were never even discussed when 1 started my gymnastic career decades ago, In the same vein, the business world has continued to evolve and become flatter, This has significantly increased competitive intensity and accelerated many more to failure faster than we have ever seen, The playing field for every leader and business is more complex and fast-paced than ever.
In retrospect, during the first part of my career, it seemed as if we could slowly walk backward into the big industry-focused megatrends and survive with the pack, Today, if you are not fully prepared and racing full speed into the economy, you will be left in the dust. And this has been the reality for many leaders and companies.
Having realized all of this, the driving aspiration for us with this book was to coach you to maximize your Future Growth Potential as a leader because doing so it will greatly improve your career and interactions with your colleagues, Hopefully, it will also have some great side effects, such as improving your parenting, teamwork, and investment skills.
What we have tried to achieve through the Growth Coaching Program is to take what seems to be almost magical process and turn it into a science, a methodology, or a series of algorithms that convert magic into common senser all of which we can all learn from and use. I realize more than anybody, that this is an almost impossible undertaking, However, after having devoted my entire career to being an analyst of innovation, economic development, leadership, strategy, and visionary scenarios, I have come to the conclusion that this model offers some very powerful, although sometimes flawed, insights into what it takes to significantly increase your Future Growth Potential as a leader and a human being.
Having understood that, in our leadership analysis work we have identified traits that we believe are essential for maximizing your Future Growth Potential as a leader. While these 20 traits have been inspired by Steve Jobs, I have observed many Insanely Great leaders such as Bill Gates and Elon Musk apply and greatly benefit from them throughout their careers. These traits are all interrelated and sometimes have significant overlaps, However, this is the reality of magic-science-like leadership. There is no clarity and there are no simple equations. Great leaders must feel totally comfortable with this lack of clarity and the stew of complexity in which we all exist.
Growth Coaching divides the 20 leadership traits into two critical perspectives: creating the ideal innovation environment and process; and driving implementation excellence, These two critical perspectives (or what we call Innovation and Growth Implementation) will be imperative if you want to drive growth in your organization. If you want to seriously maximize your Future Growth Potential, then you will need to focus on finding the right balance between the two as you develop your skills and those of your team.

Together, these 20 traits form the core of Growth Coaching and will be explained in detail in Chapter 5. The chapter has been divided into10 sessions to facilitate better understanding. Each session will take you through one Growth Implementation trait and one Innovation trait. We have also shared the experiences of some of our leaders in Chapter 5.
