Ms. Mandy Zhu
Mandy
Mandy
我希望不仅能培养学生在学术上有所成就,还能培养他们看世界的眼光,学会拥有critical thinking(批判性思维),an open mind of learning(开放的学习心态), 和independence(独立品格)。
Ms Mandy Zhu
Dulwich International High School Programme Hengqin
Teacher of Maths
With a strong belief in and enthusiasm for education, Mandy returned to the Dulwich campus as a math teacher after graduating from University College London (UCL).
“During my time studying Psychology at UCL, I was deeply exposed to Educational Psychology.I have learnt that education plays a vital role in the path of personal growth, both as an inspirer of knowledge and a guide in the stages of life. It gave me a guidance of what I wanted to be in the future- It was then that I began to envision myself as a teacher.”
Ms Mandy's Maths Class
Walking back into the campus of her high school alma mater, Mandy felt both intimate and magical. It's the similar atmosphere, with its laid-back classes, active CCAs and the basketball team she played on,where Mandy excelled academically at high school, achieving the highest score for IGCSE Maths (“Top of the World”) and being captain of the girls' basketball team!
Miraculously, the campus has been given a new look, while at the same time working with Mr Sweeney and Mr Blevins, teachers from her school days as a student.
Mandy recalls a former PE and Humanities teacher who gave her a great insight into the role of a teacher. He imparted knowledge in a professional manner and helped the students to enjoy the subject; after class, he communicated with the students as easily as a friend; on the pitch, he analysed the tactics of the game with the players in a rational and calm manner and gave them encouragement.
Quick Q&A for Ms Mandy:
Q
How is it returning to Dulwich in a new role?
A
I still have strong feelings about Dulwich as I spent a lot of great time here. Althoughthe old campus was much smaller than here at Hengqin, the students were more intimate with each other, we made so many memories together. Now, I hope to bring my knowledge and new vision to the new generation of students.
Q
What do you find the most interesting part about teaching?
A
Mathematics is full of seemingly abstract concepts.I was glad to see how my students went from being unfamiliar to understanding and learning to use these concepts as I explained them. For example, in Year 12 Maths there is a topic on “conditional probability”, which may seem abstract at first, but I introduced the fact with the boys and girls in my class wear glasses, and the students were able to understand it easily!
Q
What do you think has been the most valuable experience of your career so far?
A
I think patience is pretty important.Because each student learns in a different way. It's not enough for a teacher to just explain knowledge; they should also teach students the method and how to learn.
Q
Couldyou give us a tip for learning Maths?
A
(Laughs) I was asked the same question when I was a student.Maths is not that difficult, but you have to remember, understand and apply the concepts and principles behind them. And now that as a teacher, I will try my best to get my class to tackle practical problems first, then to get them interested in maths and go deeper into the knowledge points. It's also important to regularly review and consolidate the knowledge.
Q
In addition to your work as a Teacher of Maths, you are currently working as the Alumni Coordinator for DHHQ, what are the expectations of this job?
A
I am honoured to be given this role! I hope to strengthen alumni links and help to create a platform for DHHQ graduates to network and“Have More Fun”!
Of course, I'm going to make a strong appeal to our current students to join our Dulwich World-Alumni-Network ('WAN') Alumni Association after they graduate! You'll meet lots of other Dulwich School alumni!
Q
What goals do you have for your teaching career?
A
I hope to educate students not only to be academically successful, but I also want to help them develop a global perspective, critical thinking skills, an openness to learning, and independence.I look forward to seeing my students doing what they love when I meet them in 10 years' time.
Conclusion
Mandy believes that education itself has many aspects, not just exams, but things like attitudes and problem-solving skills. Teaching students how to behave, act, think independently and respect others and themselves is the essence of education.
