NEWS FROM THE MOVEMENT
Black Warrior Riverkeeper and Hurricane Creekeeper (Alabama, U.S.), represented by the Southern Environmental Law Center, have signed a settlement agreement with the city of Tuscaloosa and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. This agreement aims to address the city’s ongoing sewage spills and violations of the Clean Water Act. Tuscaloosa has officially committed to evaluating and overhauling its sewage system after being accused of violating the Alabama Water Pollution Control Act by releasing over 41 million gallons of raw sewage into local waterways over the past five years. The city has pledged to invest $18 million in upgrades and to provide more comprehensive public notices when future spills occur.
Loreto Coastkeeper (Mexico), Carlos Posadas, the Director of Eco-Alliance, recently attended the inaugural meeting of the Presidents of Advisory Councils of Protected Natural Areas in the Northwest Zone of the country. This gathering serves as an important platform for enhancing dialogue, learning, and sharing experiences related to governance, climate change, and inclusion. Driven by organizations such as WRI Mexico, Casua Nature, and Civic Collaboration, the meeting aims to improve decision-making in the management of protected natural areas, ecosystems, and the communities that depend on them.
Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper (Pennsylvania, U.S.) is set to reach a $1.15 million settlement with Hanover Foods to resolve several years of violations of the Clean Water Act. According to a recently submitted legal decree, Hanover Foods will pay a civil penalty of $575,000 to the government, plus an additional amount to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, for a total of $1.15 million. The original complaint in the 2021 lawsuit alleged that state and federal agencies claimed the company had breached its wastewater discharge permit limits for pollutants.Ted Evgeniadis, Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper, emphasized that no one should be allowed to pollute York County's streams or the river, and that if they do, they must be held accountable for addressing the issue.
Suwannee Riverkeeper (Georgia, U.S.) reports significantly lower water levels in the upper Suwannee River. Without substantial rainfall, both fish and the communities that depend on the river are facing serious challenges. Some fish may become trapped in isolated pools, and according to John Quarterman from Suwannee Riverkeeper, the low water levels are making it extremely difficult for people to navigate the river with power boats. The Suwannee River Water Management District is monitoring groundwater levels, and its reports indicate that current levels are still well above record lows.
Waterkeeper Bahamas (Bahamas) has started conducting water quality testing and environmental monitoring in support of the temporary causeway currently under construction at the Taino Beach Bridge. This rehabilitation project aims to restore full access for both light and heavy vehicles. Waterkeepers Bahamas, along with its partners, is ensuring that this infrastructure improvement is implemented with strong environmental safeguards, particularly concerning the coastal and marine environment.
