A while ago, Ms. Yang from Wuhan University was still being reported by netizens even after she went to study in Spain. Surprisingly, she is presented as a positive figure in a university textbook. The book is Mental Health Education for College Students, published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University Press in 2024.
Of course, the court ruling had not yet been issued back in 2024; the judgment only came out in 2025. But before the court reached any formal verdict, the publishers rushed to include this incident in the textbook. Wasn’t that rather hasty?
Now that the court has handed down its ruling confirming that Mr. Xiao was simply scratching an eczema rash and that no sexual harassment took place, can this textbook still be used for college students?
Textbooks carry great authority in students’ minds, and students rarely question their authenticity. This can subtly shape many people’s perceptions.
Ms. Yang could even show this textbook to her university in Spain and say, “Look, this is in a textbook.” Would those overseas institutions know that this was a false accusation?
So which carries greater authority: the textbook, or the court judgment?
The textbook editors rushed to put this highly controversial incident into print before any ruling, clearly letting their stance come first.
With this attitude and standard, how can they be trusted to compile textbooks for university students? Isn’t this misleading college students? This is deeply irresponsible.
Now that the facts have been clarified by the court, how can this printed textbook clear Mr. Xiao’s name?
It is another form of harm to him. Perhaps the only way to get the publisher to correct this is for Mr. Xiao to file a lawsuit against them.
Should the editors be held accountable? Should all distributed copies of the textbook be recalled and destroyed? And should the publishers issue an apology and revise the content in the next edition?
