说是组合词，其实是两个词通过and连在一起，形成一个词组；也有写作两个词通过破折号加and连在一起。有时候，它们会押头韵，如spick and span，更多时候是押尾韵，如by hook or by crook, dine and wine，也有时候不押韵，如ball and chain。寻思这样的英文表达，估么着是因为一个词还不足以表达本意，需要加一个来助长声势。就不去探索源头了，记住下面这一批吧。

By and by: 不久e.g.Summer vacation will come by and by

Bits and pieces/ bits and bites：琐碎的事情（东西）

Ball and chain:拖累；束缚

Bread and circuses=people’s basic needs

Beck and call：有求必应He was at the president’s beck and call （beck源自beckon）

By hook or by crook：不择手段

Chaotic and twirly：慌慌张张

Cut and dried：常规的、例行的=cut and dry

Cut and run：急忙逃走

Dine and wine：吃喝

Divide and rule：分而治之

Fiddle-faddle：瞎扯

Far and wide：四面八方地

Front and center ：重要的

Fast and loose: 行为古怪。E.g. Play fast and loose行事反复无常；把…当儿戏；玩弄感情

Give and take ：让步

Here and there：不同地方

High and low：四处 e.g. Look high and low四处寻找

High and dry：困境；搁浅

Huff and puff：气喘吁吁；怒气冲冲

Hustle and bustle：喧闹

Hot and cold: 忽冷忽热 E.g. Blow hot and cold 举棋不定

Hammers and tongs：闹哄哄地

Hue and cry：大声抗议

Jingle and jangle：金属的吵杂声.E.g Can you keep your spurs from jingling and jangling?嘟嘟囔囔的

Kith and kin：朋友

Nip and tuck：势均力敌 =neck and neck

Now and then:有时候

Nuts-and-bolts：关于具体细节的

Nickle and dime ：斤斤计较

Push and pull：情感张力

Pick and steal：小偷小摸

Odds and ends：琐碎的；渣渣哇哇的事情

Quirk and twist:怪癖和奇想

Rough-and-tumble:混乱；打闹

Rough and tough:粗暴的

Slings and arrows:怒骂

Spick and span:非常整洁的 e.g. a spick and span kitchen

Sneers and catcalls：蔑视和哄闹

Stuff and nonsense：无稽之谈

Short and sweet：简洁明了

Toss and turn：辗转反侧

Tweedledum and tweedledee: 两个难分彼此的人或物；半斤八两 E.g. The radicals said that Nixon and Humphrey were Tweedledum and Tweedledee.

Up and running：建成并投入运行

Up and around/up and about：（病愈后）下床活动

Wear and tear（物品的）消磨

Wash and wear免熨

Wheeling and dealing 讨价还价
