World Suicide Prevention Day
September 10th, 2018
Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. Every year there are close to 800,000 deaths by suicide —with many more attempts made.
Every suicide is a tragedy that affects families, communities and entire countries, and has long-lasting effects on the people left behind. Suicide is a serious public health problem; however, suicides are preventable with timely, evidence-based and often low-cost interventions.
Fight the stigma.
Stigma, particularly surrounding mental disorders and suicide, means many people thinking of taking their own life or who have attempted suicide are not seeking help and are therefore not getting the help they need. The stigma attached to suicide means that many cases or attempts go unreported or unnoticed, deaths are misclassified as an accident and the scale of the problem is misunderstood.
#Let’sTalk
Together, we can create a safe space for friends and family to speak openly about their challenges, without fear of being judged. Thoughts of suicide can afflict anyone from any corner of the world. Although frequently associated with mental health, such as depression, suicide also happens impulsively in the face of extreme stress or conflict. Financial problems, feelings of isolation, relationship break-up or chronic pain and illness, may all lead to suicidal thoughts.
It might seem difficult to find the right words to help someone contemplating suicide. There is no specific formula. By simply offering support and a listening ear, you may help to reduce their distress. Listen, support, and link them to professional help.
Know the signs.
Depression, a condition that is frequently associated with suicide, is an illness that can be characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, lasting over at least two weeks.
In addition, people with depression normally have several of the following signs: a loss of energy; a change in appetite; sleeping more or less than normal; anxiety; reduced concentration; indecisiveness; restlessness; feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness; and thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
Report responsibly.
Media plays a critical role in suicide prevention efforts. Careful wording, exercising caution with detail and images, and including reliable information and resources are all part of responsible reporting on suicide.
