五帝钱，指五枚圆形方孔的铜钱币，“外圆内方”“天人合一”，取其象天法地，蕴含着我国古代天圆地方的宇宙观和哲学思想，是古代阴阳五行学说的具体体现。古代民间，一直有用古铜钱驱邪招福的习俗，通常将五枚铜钱串在一起，代表着五方五行力量。五帝，原始意义上是指东、南、西、北、中五方天帝，为五方神，分配五行、五色，金木水火土、白青玄赤黄。经历史演变、文化融合，原始意义上的五方天帝演变为指古代朝代五个帝王，古代帝王有很多，为符合“五”数，从诸古代帝王中挑选“五”个作为五帝。五个帝王钱币也分别有两种说法，一说是指秦朝铸的半两钱、汉代的五铢钱、唐朝的开元通宝、宋朝的宋元通宝和明朝的永乐通宝（称为大五帝钱）；另一说是指清朝最兴盛的五位帝王(顺治、康熙、雍正、乾隆和嘉庆)在位期间所铸造的古钱（称为小五帝钱）。
