五帝钱,指五枚圆形方孔的铜钱币,“外圆内方”“天人合一”,取其象天法地,蕴含着我国古代天圆地方的宇宙观和哲学思想,是古代阴阳五行学说的具体体现。古代民间,一直有用古铜钱驱邪招福的习俗,通常将五枚铜钱串在一起,代表着五方五行力量。五帝,原始意义上是指东、南、西、北、中五方天帝,为五方神,分配五行、五色,金木水火土、白青玄赤黄。经历史演变、文化融合,原始意义上的五方天帝演变为指古代朝代五个帝王,古代帝王有很多,为符合“五”数,从诸古代帝王中挑选“五”个作为五帝。五个帝王钱币也分别有两种说法,一说是指秦朝铸的半两钱、汉代的五铢钱、唐朝的开元通宝、宋朝的宋元通宝和明朝的永乐通宝(称为大五帝钱);另一说是指清朝最兴盛的五位帝王(顺治、康熙、雍正、乾隆和嘉庆)在位期间所铸造的古钱(称为小五帝钱)。
