Two UNNC undergraduate programmes awarded provincial level “First-Class” status
According to the latest results of the “2021 National and Provincial First Class Undergraduate Programmes list” announced by the General Office of the Ministry of Education, the BEng Product Design and Manufacture and BA International Studies undergraduate programmes were both awarded with provincial level “First-Class” status.
In addition to the previously awarded national level First-Class undergraduate programme (BSc Finance, Accounting and Management), and seven provincial level First-Class undergraduate programmes (BEng Environmental Engineering, BEng Mechanical Engineering, BEng Chemical Engineering, BEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering, BEng Civil Engineering, BA International Communications Studies, BA International Economics and Trade), nearly half of UNNC undergraduate programmes have now been rated as First-Class programmes. Nottingham University Business School China, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Science and Engineering all contain programmes now ranked at First-Class level.
In terms of modules, UNNC’s “Marketing Management” and “Project Design” modules have been rated as national First-Class modules, and 38 other modules have been rated as provincial First-Class modules. UNNC is the first Sino-foreign university to be awarded with both national First-class undergraduate programmes and modules.
UNNC has consistently attached great importance to its curriculum development, combining key disciplines of the University of Nottingham with China’s social and economic development needs, as well as to establishing international degree programmes with Chinese characteristics so that students can receive world-class higher education at a lower cost.
Taking the Product Design and Manufacture and International Studies programmes as examples, both courses are based off international teaching systems, characterised by English small class teaching and seminars, with a strong focus on cultivating students’ abilities in critical thinking and teamwork.
The Product Design and Manufacture programme is accredited by both the British Engineering and Technology Society (IET) and the British Institute of Design Engineers (iED). The programme adopts the latest syllabus recommended by IET and iED, representing the most advanced level of curriculum design for undergraduate education in industrial design worldwide. Aside from module content, students on the programme also have the opportunity to engage in scientific research and internships in order to practically apply the theoretical knowledge learned during class time.
Approximately 30% of graduates from the Product, Design and Manufacture programme who choose to study abroad have been admitted to the top ten universities in the world for design programmes, including at Parsons School of Design, Royal College of Art, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, etc. Employed graduates are also favoured by well-known international institutions such as Microsoft, IBM, Huawei, etc.
As one of the first batches of courses in UNNC, the International Studies programme is designed according to the professional benchmarks of the UK Higher Education Quality Assurance Agency and is an interdisciplinary major. The programme benefits from an international faculty, with 15 faculty members from 13 countries, including academicians of the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Society of Arts and Humanities, and their research fields also span comparative politics, international relations theory, environment and energy security, world history, contemporary China studies and other disciplines.
The programme has cultivated a number of complex talents who are proficient in international rules and have cross-cultural communication capabilities for foreign affairs, academic research, and non-governmental organizations and enterprises. In recent years, about 90% of graduates who choose to study overseas have entered the top 100 institutions in the world, and graduates who moved into employment were hired by top firms, including UN affiliated agencies, KPMG, Deloitte, etc.
