我在知乎上发现很多律师， 尤其是上海的律师，喜欢用自己的姓氏加上Esq.
这个Esq.到底是什么意思呢？不懂就问，不会就学，要不然你（我）就OUT了。
我们先来康康这个词的本意。
Esquire
n. 先生；绅士。
esq.=esquire，写信时对男性的敬称。
Esq.是个缩写，原词叫Esquire，缩写后大小写不能乱用，E大写，sq小写，后面还得加点。
在元照英美法词典中，Esquire的解释是这样的：

(1)〈英〉候补骑士；绅士 地位仅次于骑士〔knight〕，略高于绅士〔gentleman〕。
(2)〔E-〕…先生 在英国，一般用来称呼郡长、治安法官、高级律师等，为较古老的尊称。在美国，一般附于姓名之后用来称呼律师〔attorney〕。
在英国，Esquire(缩写Esq.)通常是一个礼貌称谓。历史上，Esquire是对社会地位较高的人的尊称，低于骑士，高于绅士。后来，它在正式场合被用作对任何人的一般礼貌称谓，通常作为他名字的后缀，如“约翰·史密斯先生”，没有确切的意义。在某些正式场合，它仍然是一种社会地位的标志，在正式的优先顺序中得到承认。Esquire与squire一词相似，后者在中世纪的意思是骑士的学徒。

In the United Kingdom, Esquire historically was a title of respect accorded to men of higher social rank, below the rank of knight and above the rank of gentleman. In certain formal contexts, it remains an indication of a social status that is recognized in the formal Order of Precedence. Esquire is similar to the word squire, which in medieval times meant an apprentice to a knight.
在美国，Esquire这个头衔在法律界人士中很常见。这个词既适用于男律师，也适用于女律师。

根据以上词义解释来看，总结如下：
Esq.相当于“先生”的称谓，是一种敬语，尤其在写信或文件中常用。英国的适用范围较广，美国多用于律师。
我们国家的律师业务既然要与国际接轨，自然也可以使用，方便国际交流嘛。
有疑问的是，能不能律师自己在知乎ID或微信昵称中自称Esq.？
个人觉得不必过于较真，既然这个称谓是一种标识，用了也就用了，不必过分拘谨。
第一，没必要像古人那样，自谦只能“鄙人”，抬举他人只能“阁下”。自信的文化，也是一种文化。
第二，与人方便。别人想要@某位Esq.的时候，不就方便多了吗？免的别人不知如何称呼律师。
第三，文化是发展融合、交流互动的，而且会形成自己的特色。好比国外吃牛排用刀叉，那是因为他们不会用筷子。中国人用筷子吃牛排，一夹一个准，谁规定非要用刀叉？就想吃全熟，谁规定就得五六七八分熟？又是谁规定必须偶数熟或者奇数熟？自信点，吃到嘴里都一样。
