“熟词生义”是英语中常见的情况，看似每个单词都认识，连在一起就不知道是什么意思。

比如这个单词： ladybird 。

西尔莎·罗南和甜茶演的《伯德小姐》获得过多项大奖提名，但更多人好奇的是，罗南在电影中的角色为什么叫Lady Bird？Lady Bird是罗南给自己起的外号，而且她坚持要求老师和家人叫她这个名字。
lady是女士，bird是鸟， ladybird是鸟夫人？？

ladybird的本意跟人没有关系， 跟鸟也沾不上边。

先来看看英英解释： a small flying insect, usually red with black spots

所以，ladybird的意思是指： 瓢虫 。

这是英式英语中的表达， 美式英语中则常用 ladybug 。

例句：

Actually, a ladybird is not a lady.

事实上，瓢虫可不是一位女士。

那么，瓢虫为什么被称为是ladybird呢？

据说，来源是这样的：

The name "ladybird" originated in Britain where the insects became known as "Our Lady's bird" or the Lady beetle.

Mary (Our Lady) was often depicted wearing a red cloak in early paintings, and the spots of the seven-spot ladybird (the most common in Europe) were said to symbolise her seven joys and seven sorrows.

这里的Mary就是圣母玛利亚，又被欧洲诸国人民尊称为Our Lady，一般来说our和lady的首字母都要大写，以示尊敬，可以直译为“我们的夫人”。

上面这段英语解释说因为圣母玛利亚的早期画像里总是穿一件红色的斗篷，于是人们就把这个红色斗篷和各处常见到的七星瓢虫联系起来。同时把瓢虫身上的七个黑斑称为象征圣母的“七喜七悲”(the seven joys and seven sorrows of Mary）。

因此，七星瓢虫就被称为是ladybird。

bird还可以表达：某类人；家伙。

比如：

He's a tough old bird .

他是一个难缠的老家伙。

所以 rare bird = 古怪的人，不寻常的人

例句：

The woman's beauty made her a rare bird indeed.

美貌确实使她成了一个绝世佳人。

"dragon lady" 难道是小龙女？

当然不是。

它是指“ 嚣张跋扈的女人 ”，也就是我们常说的“母夜叉”。

例句：

They call her the dragon lady because she is always yelling at children.

他们把她叫做母夜叉，因为她总是对着孩子大吼大叫。
