学英语的过程中，很多时候我们都会望文生义，结果往往会弄出一些笑话。比如今天要和大家说的“on the house”。

如果只看字面意思，是不是很容易理解成在房子上？但真正的意思差远了！

还有下面这几个跟house有关的短语，它们真正的意思你都知道吗？

在英语中，表达猫窝更常用cat bed或cattery，而cathouse在口语中经常是指“妓院”。

"It is not a hotel, but a cathouse."
那不是旅馆，而是妓院

说到“妓院”，还有一种表达，叫“sporting house”，这个大家也一定要知道，不要只看字面意思，以为是“体育室”或者“健身房”，这样很容易闹出笑话的。

<美俚>受冷遇，失宠，丢脸✔

你使某人很生气，以致你不得不在屋子外跟自己家里的狗睡在一起，也就是说，因为做错了事，受冷落，受惩罚，类似汉语中的失宠或倒霉了。

Her husband was in the doghouse for leaving her to cope on her own.
她丈夫因让她独自应付把她惹毛了。

house poor

I love our home, but we can't afford high rent, it's making us rather house poor as a result.
我喜欢我们家，但是我们付不起高房租，这会让我们变成房奴的。

还有一个看起来有点像的表达home free。

如果从字面上理解，这个表达是“全家免费”或者“家庭免费”的意思？其实，“home free”跟“家”和“免费”都没有关系，它的意思是“确信即将成功，胜利在望”。

还有一个类似的表达是“be home and dry”，在澳大利亚英语中说成“be home and hosed”，意思是“成功地完成”。

be home and dry: to have successfully finished something

We just have to finish this section, then we're home and dry.

我们只需完成这个部分，然后就大功告成了。

最后，再为大家介绍一些和home有关的俚语表达。

home base = home plate （人的）住所；（机构的）总部

home in on sth/sb 瞄准，对准/集中注意力于

这里的home是动词，有两种意思。第一种是“瞄准，对准”。

The missile homed in on the ship.

导弹瞄准了那艘船。

第二种是“集中注意力于”。

The report homed in on the weaknesses in the management structure.

这篇报告重点论述了该管理体系的弱点。
