冠词的正确使用对于英文论文写作的初学者来说也是一大难点。英语中的冠词主要包括“a”“an”和“the”，它们在英文论文中的使用与日常英语的表达稍有差异，主要体现在科技论文中的很多不可数名词前需要加“the”，但总体的规则是一致的，即通过该名词是否为特指来判断是否需要加“the”，再根据该名词是否为单数去确定是否需要加“a”或“an”。
如果该名词为特指，则需要在该名词前或其修饰词前加入“the”，判断是否为特指的简单方法。
①某事物为唯一一个，则一定是特指。
the sun、the sky (太阳、天空都只有一个);first、second等序数词之前(第一、第二都是唯一的); most、best等最高级之前(最多、最好都只有一个)。
②将要表达的意思翻译成中文，该名词如果前面可以加上“任何”“一般”“某一些”“某种”之类的修饰，则应当理解为泛指，如果该名词前可以加上“这一些”“这个”“这种”修饰，则应当理解为特指。
例1:Add 1 g of sodium carbonate to the water in the graduated cylinder.(向量筒中的这些水加入1g碳酸钠)
例2:The perimeter of a square is the total length of the four equal sides of thesquare.(任一正方形的周长是这个正方形的四条相等的边的长度的和)
③科技论文中具体描述某一事物的特性参数通常理解为特指。
例1: The density of a substance is the relationship between the mass of thesubstance and its volume.
例2:The temperature of a substance gives information about the kinetic energyof its molecules.
如果某一可数名词不是特指，且为单数，则要在该名词前或其修饰词前加入“a”或者“an”，该词以元音音素开头则使用“an”，否则使用“a”。
例:A volume of alcohol has less mass than an equal volume of water.
如果某一名词不是特指，同时又是复数，则无须添加冠词。
另外，当名词已经被以下词语限定时，不需要用“a”“an”或者“the”。其余情况均与日常英语中的用法相同。
