前言
Zulpiya Sadik is an associate professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Mechanical and Power Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). She received her bachelor's degree from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of SJTU in 2012, and her doctorate degree from the Department of Chemistry of Fudan University in 2017. From 2017 to 2021, she worked as a postdoctoral assistant and associate researcher at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the United States, and joined the Fuel Cell Research Institute of the School of Mechanical and Power Engineering, SJTU in June 2021. Selected as the national and Shanghai Overseas high-level talents, Shanghai Pujiang Talent Program, and Xiaomi Young scholars of SJTU. Her main research interests are the development of key materials and failure mechanism of high specific energy secondary batteries. She has published 75 papers in journals such as NatureEnergy, Nature Nanotechnology and Nature Communications, and has been cited 4600 times. She is currently on the youth editorial board of SusMat, eScience, Chinese Chemical Letters, Nano Research and guest editorial board of Batteries.
祖丽皮亚·沙地克,上海交通大学机械与动力工程学院副教授,博士生导师。2012年本科毕业于上海交通大学化学化工学院,2017年博士毕业于复旦大学化学系。2017年至2021年在美国布鲁克海文国家实验室担任博士后助理研究员和副研究员,2021年6月加入上海交大学机械与动力工程学院燃料电池研究所。入选国家和上海市海外高层次人才、上海市浦江人才计划,上海交通大学小米青年学者。主要研究方向是高比能二次电池关键材料开发与失效机理研究,在NatureEnergy、Nature Nanotechnology和Nature Communications 等期刊发表论文75篇,被引4600次。目前担任SusMat、eScience、Chinese Chemical Letters、Nano Research期刊青年编委,Batteries期刊客座编委等。
"I can't count how many days, leaving early and returning late, sitting at my desk day and night; I can't remember how many times I've overturned my conclusions and started all over again. Interest, full of enthusiasm
兴趣,满腔热忱所在
Zulpiya grew up in a relaxed, loving family.
祖丽皮亚在一个轻松欢快、爱意十足的家庭中长大。
Her parents spent as much of their free time as possible with their children, and the park has become a permanent place for family members to relax and entertain, which has gradually shaped her cheerful and lively personality.
父母的空闲时间尽可能都用来陪伴孩子们,而公园成了家庭成员们休闲娱乐的常驻地,这逐渐塑造了她开朗活泼的性格。
"Till anytime you want to study we'll make it available to you." It was something her parents often said to her.
“你愿意读到什么时候,我们就会供你读到什么时候。”这是父母经常对祖丽皮亚说的话。
When she felt struggling in learning, she took the initiative to give feedback to her parents, to actively communicate with them, and to seek their help.
在学习上感到些许吃力时,她主动向父母反馈,积极沟通,寻求父母的帮助。
In addition to hiring a full-time teacher for her, her parents also actively accompanied her to consult her neighbors who were math teachers, which laid a good foundation for Zulpiya's excellent results.
父母在为她聘请专职老师补习之余,还积极陪同她向担任数学老师的邻居请教,这为祖丽皮亚的优异成绩打下了良好的基础。
Several of Zulpiya's middle school teachers returned to their hometown Kashgar after studying in Shanghai.
祖丽皮亚的几位中学老师从上海求学归来后便选择回到家乡喀什任教。
They often tell the students about their study experience in Shanghai, describing the prosperity of Shanghai and the excellent reputation of famous universities such as Jiao Tong University and Fudan University.
他们时常绘声绘色地向同学们讲起他们在上海求学的经历,描摹起上海的繁华盛景以及交大、复旦等名校的卓越声誉。
Under the impact of the teachers, the desire to look forward to Shanghai arose in Zulpiya's heart became stronger and stronger.
在老师们的影响下,对上海的向往之情在祖丽皮亚的心中油然而生,愈发强烈。
"Getting admitted to a university in Shanghai" became her dream during her high school years.
“一定要考上上海的大学”成了她在中学时期的梦想。
At that time, she put this dream in her heart, and never imagined too much about the future life.
那时的她把这个梦想一直放在心里,未曾对未来生活展开过多的畅想。
In her eyes, life is full of uncertainties. Focusing solely on the future will only lead to overthinking, and being trapped in anxiety.
在她看来,生活中变数太多,一味地放眼于将来,只会让人想得太多,囿于焦虑的困境。
"So we will take a good step and live at the just moment, only concentrate on the things at present, let it go if we can't change, and we will try to make efforts to change what we can.
“所以我们就把现在的每一步走好,活在当下,只专注于眼前事,我们改变不了的就随它去吧,能改变的我们以最大的努力改变。”
It was this focus and dedication that enabled Zulpiya to maintain excellent grades throughout high school. In 2008, she ultimately made her way to the campus of SJTU from a remote city.
正是这种专注和努力,让祖丽皮亚在中学期间保持着出色的成绩。最终在2008年,她从一个偏远的城市走进了上海交通大学的校园。
And here became the place where her dream starts.
这里成为了她梦开始的地方。
Zulpiya is very interested in Chemistry, she was deeply absorbed with those unique, interesting chemical phenomane from the high school chemistry experiment. As such, she chose the major of chemical engineering and technology.
化学一直都是祖丽皮亚很感兴趣的学科,她被高中化学实验中那些奇特有趣的化学现象深深吸引,于是选择了攻读化学工程和工艺专业。
The chemical engineering major covers a wide range of fields, including drug synthesise for high blood pressure, fractionation and refining of petroleum, cosmetics production and ingredient analysis.
化工专业涉猎的领域广泛,关于高血压的药物合成、石油的分馏和炼制、化妆品的制作和成分分析等都囊括其中。
It covers almost all industries and fields such as chemical engineering, petroleum, energy, metallurgy, environmental protection, materials, biology, medicine, food and light industry.
几乎涵盖了化工、石油、能源、冶金、环保、材料、生物、医药、食品和轻工等多个行业和领域。
Under her mere background of high school knowledge, she didn't knew too much about her major, until sophomore year when she started to get in touch with undergraduate research projects, began to understand her professional background, and explored her interests.
在仅有的高中知识背景下,她对自己的专业没有过多的认知,直至大二开始接触本科生科研项目后才真正开始了解到自己所处的专业背景,探索起自己的兴趣爱好。
The university has never been a prison bird that yearns for freedom through a birdcage, four years of college career is a new starting point for self-exploration and growth.
大学从来都不是囚鸟透过鸟笼向往的自由肆意,四年的大学生涯是自我探索和成长的全新起点。

All of them put into practice, vividly interpreting the message of Ma Dexiu, the former secretary of Jiao Tong University, at the opening ceremony of freshmen - "If you choose Jiao Tong University, you choose 'the responsibility'".
所有人都付诸实践,生动地诠释了交大前书记马德秀在新生开学典礼的一句寄语——“选择了交大,就选择了‘责任’”
After that, Zulpiya entered the research group and participated in three undergraduate projects for a year and half. She is looking for her own interests and hobbies in the project, feeling and exploring the relevance of the theoretical knowledge and practical application of her major in advance, which has had a great enlightening effect on her current research direction.
随后,祖丽皮亚走进科研走进课题组,用一年半的时间参与到三个本科生项目里。她在课题项目中寻找自己的兴趣爱好,提前感受和摸索所学专业的理论知识与实际应用的关联性,这对她如今的研究方向产生了较大的启蒙作用。

Zulpiya never hesitated about on this problem. In the studing process, she still kept her enthusiasm on research project, the zeal on research, since sophomore year, she has decided to go to graduate school, hoping to have the opportunity to devote herself to scientific research in the future and do experiments that she is interested in.
祖丽皮亚在这个问题上从未犹豫过。在大学的学习过程中,她对科研的兴趣未减半分,凭借着对科研的热情,她在大二开始就一直立志读研,希望未来能有机会投身于科研事业,能做自己感兴趣的实验。
Her enthusiasm inspired by interest has become the driving force for her personal development, which finally helped her facing the difficulties on the road of scientific research with patience, exploring her potential, and realizing her scientific research dream.
兴趣激发的热忱,成为她个人发展的内驱动力,最终帮助她耐心地面对科研路上的重重难关,发掘了自己的潜力,实现了自己的科研梦。
In 2012, with excellent grades in undergraduate studies, she was successfully admitted to Fudan University for postgraduate study, where she studied under the guidence of authoritative mentors in related fields.
2012年,她凭借本科阶段优异的成绩,成功保研到复旦大学,师从相关专业领域内的权威导师。
During her postgraduate study, she was always infected by her mentor's rigorous and serious academic attitude. After more than a year of academic research in the research group, she found that she had a strong interset in the field of batteries, so she began to apply successive postgraduate and doctoral programs of study, continue to devote herself to scientific research, and continue her postgraduate road.
她在读研期间一直被导师严谨认真的学术态度所感染。在进入课题组做了一年多的学术研究后,她发现自己对电池领域产生了浓厚的兴趣,于是开始申请硕博连读,继续潜心科研,赓续研究生之路。
The key material for the development of new high-energy density sodium ion batteries is the main research field of Zulpiya during her postgraduate study.

Lithium batteries are widely used in many fields, from laptops, mobile phones and watches that can be seen everywhere in our daily life, to high-tech products such as new energy vehicles, electric aircraft, and drones, all of which are mainly driven by lithium batteries.
锂电池的应用领域十分广泛,从我们日常生活中随处可见的笔记本电脑、手机和手表,到新能源汽车、电动飞机、无人机等高科技产品都以锂电池为主要驱动力。
Yet, for our country, lithium resources are relatively scarce, which leads to higher costs of lithium batteries.

In the field of power batteries, metal oxides are often used as electrode materials. However, due to cost considerations, sulfides have a comparative advantage.
动力电池领域常常会用金属氧化物作为电极材料,然而出于对成本的考虑,硫化物更具有比较优势。
So Zulpiya's group focused on one question: can we develop some high-performance sulfide materials or not?
于是祖丽皮亚所在的课题组聚焦于一个问题:到底能不能开发一些高性能的硫化物材料?
Based on this problem orientation, the main research direction of her research group is selected as the development of a cathode material and an anode material for sodium batteries.
基于这一问题导向,祖丽皮亚所在的课题组主要的研究方向选定为钠电池的一个正极材料和负极材料的开发。
When she first started her graduate study, scientific research on sodium batteries was still in the early stages, and there were relatively few researchers.
她刚开始读研时,科学界对钠电池的研究尚处于初级阶段,研究人员也相对较少。
Therefore, compared with lithium batteries, the research progress of sodium batteries is relatively slow, which also means that there are some vague scientific issues in related research.
因此,导致钠电池的研究进展相比于锂电池来说较为缓慢,这也意味着其相关研究里存在一些模糊不清的科学问题。
During the research process, the research group discovered a new phenomenon, but they couldn't guarantee whether it was correct, so everyone was in a state of anxiety, fearing that the experimental results were wrong. After numerous repetitions and verifications, they finally confirmed that there was no problem with the experimental results.
研究过程中,课题组发现了一个新现象,但无法保证这个现象正确与否,大家便一直处于焦虑状态,害怕实验结果出错。经过大量的重复验证,这才确定实验结果没有问题。
Then, their team cooperated with American researchers to carry out more rigorous theoretical verification of the experiment using high-end characterization technology combined with first-principles calculations.
接着,他们团队又与美国的科研人员合作,采用高端表征技术并结合第一性原理计算,对实验开展了更加严谨的理论验证。
Finally, the research results confirm that the material does have a unique sodium storage mechanism.

Every project has its own scientific questions and research emphasis, and comes with its own set of challenges.
每个课题中存在的科学问题和研究重点不同,所面临的挑战也不同。
The lack of the foundation in previous research led to a slow progress of the research, even taking two years just to finish one single thing.
前期研究的基础较少,所以课题组研究进程较为缓慢,甚至前前后后花费两年时间就只为了干一件事。
Eventually, the research group confirmed that their experimental results were accurate and successfully published their paper. At the same time, they also received positive feedback and recognition for their work from experts.
最终,课题组发现实验结果没有问题,并顺利发表论文。同时,他们也收到了专家们的正面反馈,以及对课题组工作的认可与赞扬。
"It’s so hard and tough, but I have already started. Giving up would only result in invalid experimental outcomes. I need to explain the reasons behind those unique phenomena, and I need to continue working on it."
“很难,很辛苦,但我已经开始做了,我的放弃只能换来实验结果的不严谨,我得解释那些独特现象的原因,我得再往后做做。”
Zulpiya experienced confusion and anxiety, but she never considered "giving up" as an option. She always persisted for a long time to verify an unknown possibility.
祖丽皮亚迷茫过,也焦虑过,但从来没有将“放弃”这两个字列入自己的备选项中,她始终坚持用很长的时间,去验证一个未知的可能。
Fellow students had published many papers during those two years, while Zulpiya was at a bottleneck stage, still learning about solid-state physics, structural chemistry, and theoretical calculations involved in her topic.
那两年时间里,周边的同学已经陆陆续续地发表了不少文章,祖丽皮亚却处于瓶颈阶段,还在不断学习课题中涉及到的固体物理、结构化学、理论计算等专业知识。
Doing experiments during the day and reading at night, working and learning for 16 to 17 hours a day had become her daily routine.
白天做实验,晚上看书,每天学习和工作16、17个小时,对她而言已经习以为常。
Fortunately, research is not about struggling alone and climbing upwards on one's own; it also depends significantly on the strong support of mentor.
十分幸运的是,做研究不只是一个人孤军奋战,向上攀爬,这也离不开导师的全力托举。
Professor Fu Zhengwen always encouraged and supported Zulpiya to make some breakthroughs. When she encountered difficult problems, he would take her to consult with other teachers who were more knowledgeable in relevant fields and seek their help.
导师傅正文教授总是会鼓励和支持祖丽皮亚做一些突破。当她遇到难题时,导师就会带着她去找在相关领域比较在行的老师,向他们请教并寻求帮助。
With the passion for scientific research, rigorous academic attitude, and the fully help from her mentor, Zulpiya continued to advance on her path to research.
秉持着对科研的热爱、严谨的学术态度以及老师的鼎力相助,祖丽皮亚朝着科研之路,继续向前迈出了一步。
This experience made her learn a lot and grow a lot, making it one of the most memorable and meaningful periods during her graduate studies.
这段经历让她学到了很多东西,也成长了很多,成为研究生阶段中最难忘、最有意义的一段经历。
One step, one more step
走一步,再走一步
In 2016, Zulpiya was in her second year of doctoral studies, and almost completed her doctoral project.
2016年,祖丽皮亚正在读博士二年级,她的博士课题已经基本完成。
She heard of a project by Professor Yang Xiaoqing that accepted visiting students. Encouraged by her doctoral mentor, she successfully applied to the visiting program, obtaining a joint training opportunity at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the U.S. and the position of a postdoctoral research assistant there.
她偶然得知杨晓青教授的一个项目可以接收访问学生,于是在博导的鼓励下,她顺利申请上访问项目,获得了美国布鲁克海文国家实验室的联合培养机会和后期的博士后助理研究员职位。
This gave her the chance to access to the research field she loved.
这使她有机会接触到自己热爱的研究领域。
In the early stage of her graduate studies, Zulpiya often took the initiative to communicate with her mentor and senior peers to keep learning. Later, she gradually started to complete experiments and data analysis independently.
研究生阶段初期,祖丽皮亚经常主动和导师以及师兄师姐沟通,不断学习。后期,她便逐渐独立完成实验和数据分析。
For Zulpiya, the post-doctoral stage is a transition period from a student to a researcher, who needs to be more independent, determine the topic and research direction by herself, and even mentor graduate students.
而博士后阶段对于祖丽皮亚而言,是一个由学生转变成为科研人员的身份过渡期,既需要更加独立,又需要自行确定课题和研究方向,甚至带研究生。
In her view, how can she teach others what she has learned is important.
在她看来,如何将自己学到的东西教给别人这点尤为重要。
In the United States during the postdoctoral period, Zulpiya often stayed up all night doing experiments for research, worked until 4 or 5 am for two weeks before going to sleep and 7 or 8 o'clock in the morning, and rushed back to continue to do experiments.
在美国攻读博士后期间,祖丽皮亚为了研究工作常常通宵做实验,曾连续两周工作到半夜四五点钟才回家睡觉,早上七八点钟又赶回去继续做实验。
On weekends, she would take the time to cook all the meals for the next few days and put them in the refrigerator, and eat ready-made meals every day in order to save more time to study and do experiments.
周末,她会花时间把之后几天的饭做好放在冰箱里,每天吃现成的饭,以便腾出更多的时间花在学习和实验上。
In the midst of her busy schedule, she often thinks of her family, friends, and the delicious food from her hometown, but her passion for scientific research can overcome the loneliness of studying alone in a foreign land.
在繁忙中,她也常常思念家人、朋友和家乡美食,但对科研的一腔热血,可以抵过她在异国他乡独自求学的孤独。
She would also encounter some problems that she couldn't understand. At that time, she thought to herself that as a postdoc, she was already quite old and really felt embarrassed to ask for help.
她也会遇到一些弄不懂的问题,那时的她心想博后已经那么大了,实在是不好意思去请求帮助。
Her mentor did not agree with this viewpoint. He often said, "The problems you struggle with for two or three weeks might be resolved in half an hour after discussing with me."
她的导师却不这么认同这个观点,他常说“你们自己在那倒腾两三周的问题,说不定在我这半个小时跟你讨论完就搞定了。”
She summarized her experience:"Others may have traveled this path before, and mistakes others may have made. It is definitely necessary to continuously explore the problem on your own, but when your ability is not enough, actively communicating with others is also very important. Don't 'lock' yourself in the problem and not come out."
她总结经验道:“这条路别人可能走过,错误别人可能犯过。问题肯定需要自己不断摸索,当自己能力不够时,积极和别人沟通也很重要,不要把自己‘锁’在难题里不出来。”
The mentor's care and support became an important pillar for Zulpiya during her studies abroad.
导师的关怀和照顾成为了祖丽皮亚在外求学期间的重要支撑。
Professor Yang Xiaoqing often prepares a hot breakfast for the students after they work through the night on experiments, sweeping away the fatigue from a night's work, which fills Zulpiya's heart with gratitude and happiness.
杨晓青教授经常在同学们通宵实验之后准备好热腾腾的早餐,扫去大家工作一晚后的疲劳,这让祖丽皮亚心中充满感激和幸福。
The five years of study and work in the United States were a peculiar experience filled with pain but also growth and warmth, which further strengthened her passion and belief in the scientific research career.
在美国学习和工作的五年,是一段痛苦但又充满成长和温暖的奇特经历,因此更坚定了她对科研事业的热爱和信念。
In 2017, by chance, Zulpiya followed Professor Yang Xiaoqing to attend an important conference in the field of lithium batteries, and was fortunate to meet two scientists who hold an important position in the field of lithium battery research—John B. Goodenough and M. Stanley Whittingham.
2017年在一次偶然的情况下,祖丽皮亚跟随杨晓青老师参加了锂电池领域的重要会议,有幸遇见了两位在锂电池研究领域具有重要地位的科学家——John B. Goodenough和M. Stanley Whittingham。
Then when participating in related projects, she had the opportunity to engage in academic exchanges with the two humble and humorous scientists, discussing issues in the field of battery research at close range.
之后参与相关的项目时,她还与两位谦逊而幽默的科学家零距离接触,进行学术交流,探讨电池领域相关问题。
In the past, she only saw the names of these two industry leaders in academic journals. Now, actually meeting them in person and walking step by step towards the "idols" she admired was a joyful and happy event for her.
从前的她,只是从期刊文献中看见两位业界大佬的名字,现如今真正见到本尊,一步一步走到崇拜的“偶像”面前,对她而言是一件开心幸福的事情。
After the two scientists won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2019, Zulpiya felt even more honored and fortunate, and she would also use this event to inspire her students: to persevere on the path they have chosen.
当两位科学家在2019年获得诺贝尔化学奖后,祖丽皮亚更加深感荣幸和幸运,也会以这件事鼓舞自己的学生:要坚持自己选择的道路。
"Settle down and sit still" is the norm for Zulpiya during her scientific research period.
“沉下心,坐得住”是祖丽皮亚从事科研期间的常态。
Reading a large number of books and journals, repeating experiments and derivations extensively, confusion and failure appearing again and again, summarizing and reviewing continuously again and again, all of these are inevitable.
书籍期刊,大量地阅读;实验推演,大量地重复;迷茫和失败一次又一次地再现,总结和复盘一次又一次地继续,这些都是必然。
However, continuous progress and getting closer to results and the truth will also be inevitable.
然而,不断进步,不断靠近成果和真理也终将会是必然。

Brookhaven National Lab holds summer camp twice a year, welcoming excellent college students in Amercia to engage in some scientific activities there. Zulpiya once was responsible for teaching some research highlights in the field of scondary battery and basic courses of electro-chemistry.
布鲁海文国家实验室每年都会举行一两次暑期夏令营,来自美国各个大学的优秀学生也将到实验室参加一些科研活动,祖丽皮亚曾负责给他们讲授二次电池领域的研究热点和电化学基础课。
It gave a feeling of motivation and joy to Zulpiya to be able to teach the knowledge that she has acquired and to see the students to apply them into practice.
将自己掌握的知识教授给别人,看着学生们学以致用,取得成果和突破,这对祖丽皮亚来说是莫大的鼓励,也是她最开心的事情。
That is why she eventually chose to went back to SJTU to teach.
这是让她最终选择返回母校从事教研工作的主要原因。
There goes a story on the campus of SJTU on the NanHai Kong's "the old man and the sea", and one of the saying that says "one must connect his dream to the development of the country and must go out of lab and write the essay for his the motherland."
交大的校园里流传着关于孔海南老师的“老人与海”的故事,其中一句话广为传颂:“一定要把自己的梦想跟国家的发展结合在一起,一定要把论文写在祖国的大地上,不要只停留在实验室。"
Under the influence of Mr. Kong, on one hand, Zulpiya is trying hard to associate his research with some of the important techniques that are not available by international trading, hoping to make contribution to the new energy field; On the other hand, she wanted to bring positive growth to his students just like her mentor did.
