The week felt like it dragged on forever as Alex anxiously waited for the soccer tryout results. He tried to stay focused in class, but his mind kept wandering back to the field. Finally, on Friday afternoon, the results were posted outside the gym.
Alex stood in front of the list, heart pounding, as he scanned the names. There, near the bottom of the list, he saw it—Alex Carter. He had made the team!
A wide grin spread across his face. He couldn’t believe it. Just a few weeks ago, he had been the new kid, unsure if he would fit in. Now, he was officially part of the school’s soccer team. It felt like everything was coming together.
When Alex told Emily the news, she gave him a high-five. “I knew you’d make it! You’re going to be great on the team.”
Over the next few weeks, Alex threw himself into soccer practice. The training was intense, but he enjoyed every minute of it. His teammates were supportive, and he quickly formed bonds with them. Playing soccer gave him a sense of belonging that he hadn’t felt since moving schools.
At the same time, Alex’s grades were improving. He was staying on top of his assignments and even started to enjoy some of his classes, particularly history, where he and Emily continued to partner up on projects. For the first time in a long while, Alex felt truly happy.
